((Starboard Bow, USS Arrow))
There was something about the stars
that celebrated solitude. They invoked the free flowing of thought and strengthened the bonds between beings who suddenly understood their relative tiny place in everything. So, too, were they capable of doing so when among them; one did not need to be with
feet planted on the ground of some planet to revel in the magic the stars allowed.
The two had shared the unique view
of the stars in silence for a few moments before the engineer spoke again.
Dewitt: I came here to look at the
stars as I did with my sister as a child. And to experience all those hard feelings of melancholy and
sorrow. I don't even know why. To feel closer to her? To distract me from the tyranny of my own thoughts?
To feel at home? ::he paused::
Thanks
for pulling me out of that.
Vincent smiled slightly and gave a quick nod. He knew exactly what the man was speaking of, and just
how hard it was to sometimes pull oneself out of such a spiral.
V.Jones: Happy I could help. Trust me when I say I do understand.
Without the grim details, or risk of them both falling into the void, Vincent offered the support he
could.
Dewitt: Then, I could use a piece of your mind every now and then. We should make this regular. ::thin
smile:: Every week, another celestial
object. Maybe we could convince the Captain to drop out of warp for half an hour.
Now that would be something.
V.Jones: And every week, the chance to shed the weight we carry and be what we once were.
What were they once? Dreamers? Wishers? Stargazers? Wistful imaginers?
Dewitt: I guess we all carry our share. I have a tendency to share mine. ::bashful smile:: The moments
we can take to step back are getting rarer
and rarer when stationed on a ship. It's something Academy did not prepare me for. I guess that's different
for a Marine?
V.Jones: The Academy prepares all of us little for reality. We're issued the knowledge, the routines and
protocols, the natural progression of things in a typical state, but then once you get out here...
He shrugged a bit.
Dewitt: Response?
V.Jones: Things change for sure.
I think it's the simple fact that normal isn't quite what the controlled environment of the Academy is able to offer.
Dewitt: Response?
Another look out at the stars, Vincent
found himself looking forward to the next time.
V.Jones: You just have to find pockets
like this to enjoy. Same time next week then?
Dewitt: Response?
