Lieutenant Commander Chloe Waters: Cut Short

As the pair of officers stood in the corridor, Chloe watched delightedly
as Mandy responded to the belly rubs she was getting from Zerva. It was
clear he knew how to handle animals, so she was curious. Why would
someone like this pick such a radically different path?


Waters: So, Ensign. Why would someone with animal care hands choose the
security track?


Ezra looked up

Zerva: My mother mostly. She worked for the Trill private service during
the Dominion War. After the war we moved around a lot as her job kept
her busy working for the Trill council. After the Trill joined the
Federation, my family moved to earth. My mother became a part of
Starfleet security and was assigned to work at the Trill Embassy, as its
security chief. I decided to follow in her footsteps. She instilled in
me the values of keeping the Federation safe. I sometimes worry I won’t
be able to live up to her standards.


Chloe regarded him and frowned faintly. She was familiar with the
feeling of being judged. All too familiar. It was only now that she
realized...


Waters: The most difficult standards to meet are your own. It is
important to recognize your limitations, but also your strengths.


Before the security officer could respond, they were interrupted by a
call that made Chloe feel, frankly, uneasy.


=/\= We’ve docked with Starbase 33. All crew members should report to
the docking bay for departure to the Starbase. =/\=


It was extremely rare that crews were asked to completely disembark a
starship. The major exception, of course, being a baryon sweep, but she
wasn't aware that one was being performed.


Zerva: So much for the run. ::stands back up:: Rain check? Maybe we
could get a run in later on the Starbase?


    Waters: Certainly, Ensign. I look forward to it.


Zerva: ::to Mandy:: It was nice to meet you Mandy. ::to Waters:: I had
fun, even if the run was cut short.


Hearing her name, Mandy perked up and let out a soft grumble of joy,
bumping Zerva's leg with her head as he rose to his feet again after
petting her.


Waters: Likewise, Ensign. Enjoy the ceremony.
