Shayne: Enter.
Stepping into the Ready Room, Maz felt keenly aware that he was there strictly on Shayne's terms. Their working relationship, and dare he say, their friendship, was now firmly suspended until the Captain had said what he needed to say.
Rodan: You request my presence, Captain?
Over the years Maz had learned to relax his mannerisms despite the tenseness of the situation. By appearing calm and collected now, it might make the meeting go a little more smoothly.
Shayne: Are you alright?
Tilting his head in his usual, curious fashion, Maz blinked. Certainly not the confrontation he assumed. After a moment, he nodded.
Rodan: I am well, Captain.
Shayne nodded then seemed to mull over the words currently in his mouth. Directness was never his failing, but tactility sometimes eluded him.
Shayne: Am I to understand that you punched a prisoner?
The young Trill raised an eyebrow curiously. Prisoner was a very large stretch of the imagination. He inclined his head slightly. When he responded, he found that the natural instincts to explain and defend himself were largely associated with Raffi rather than Maz Rodan. It took all of his strength to suppress the smirk forming on his lips.
Rodan: Affirmative, Captain. I bopped him squarely on the nose.
Shayne: Response
Rodan: For wilful disregard of established safety protocols, negligence and behaviour that could cause serious harm to Starfleet property and officers alike, he was detained. ::Beat.:: For endangering my friends, he received a rather unbecoming - to me at least - reminder not to repeat that mistake.
Shayne: Response
Maz was not known to be so frivolous in his duty. He was thorough and studious. He didn't break rules, and he didn't make light of his superior officers disdain for such behaviour, yet deep within him was a rebellious, almost reckless streak which once belonged to Raffi Rodan. Raffi, a former Trill private detective with a grandiose allergy to established protocol, had instilled in Maz a rather unique sense of right and wrong.
Rodan: Agreed, sir.
Shayne: Response
Like some kind of old Earth parrot, Maz copied Shayne's words with enthusiastic nods.
Rodan: Entirely unacceptable, sir...
Shayne: Response
Rodan: Wholly out of character, Captain.
Shayne: Response
Rodan: Utterly disgraceful...
Shayne: Response
Rodan: No, sir, I am not proud of it. Far from it. But I did it, and I meant to do it. And I'd do it again if it meant saving the lives of my fellow officers. And for that...
He levelled his blue eyes on his Captain and friend.
Rodan: I will not apologise. I accept whatever punishment is to be meted out.
Shayne: Response
