::Having downed two coffees, and splashed his face with cold water, torrid was feeling as ready as he imagined he could be to report to sickbay for his initial physical exam. Years of being scolded for drinking (Artem was far more concerned with being healthy and physically fit than Avaris ever was) had trained him to be subtle about intoxication, and he had rinsed his mouth with a minty breath-freshening solution, but knew that all this was in vain anyways, a medical tricorder would show the alcohol in his system to whoever performed the examination instantly. He really hoped that this report was confidential, he was after all not an officer so there was no reason for anybody on the ship aside from the doctor to have access to it, provided everything was in order and he wasn't horribly contagious. ::
oO Although if he were feeling snoopy, Artem could look it up as a security officer. On a Starship you don't even need a warrant for that kind of thing. Oo
:: He mused sullenly to himself on the possibility that Artem would spy on his medical exam and would be mad that he had gotten tipsy, but also knew he could not actually say anything to Avaris because it would give away that he was playing private eye, and that it would spiral into a weird argument cold war in which neither of them acknowledged the others reason for anger until, in the way that often happens when one is slightly inebriated and daydreaming, he found himself rather suddenly at sickbay with little memory of his journey there.
And upon noting the distinctive spotted pattern running from the woman's temples down the sides of her neck, Avaris was stricken with panic. He found that his tendency to be fundamentally opposed to nearly everything to do with his home worlds civilization did not make for many Trill he encountered in Starfleet ending up as friends.
The Trill woman made eye contact with him, but just as he entered the room her comm badge chirruped. She smiled and held her hand up in the universal gesture of "just a moment please" and spoke to the voice hailing her ::
Laxyn: =/\= What can I do for you Meru? =/\=
Sito: =/\= We have finished preparations of the Secondary Sick Bay, the nurses are fully instructed. We're ready for what may come. =/\=
oO They are preparing for heavy casualties? Didn't Artem say that most of the regular bridge crew was on the surface? What are they doing down there? Oo
Laxyn: =/\= Very good. As soon as I know more, I'll let you know. =/\=
Sito: =/\= Good. Oh, and Jalana? You should get some rest, you looked tired. Just a medical advice from your head nurse. =/\=
:: The disembodied voice of this Meru had a point. The medical officer looked like she badly needed rest. She looked nearly as rough as he felt ::
Laxyn: =/\= I will, when I can. Thank you Meru, Laxyn out. =/\=
::She looked back up at him, her eyes dark and lifeless, her smile seemingly forced. Avaris felt bad for the woman, something was clearly terribly wrong. She had a haunted look with a quality that surpassed a mere lack of sleep. ::
Laxyn: Good day, Mister...?
Torrin: Professor Torrin, new arrival.
Laxyn: Ah, welcome on Board then. I'm Jalana, which is my preference. If you prefer call me Doctor Laxyn.
::Torrin eyed her pips ::
Torrin: Not Lieutenant Commander then?
Laxyn: No, I don't insist on ranks in Sick bay. That would take too long ::smirking:: Are you here for your check up?
Torrin: At the behest of Starfleet, I apologies I had completely forgotten that it was expected of me today.
:: She gestured with her free hand towards one of the biobeds and waited for him to walk before she followed. ::
Laxyn: Anything I should know about before we start? I have not yet checked out your file.
Torrin: … well like I said I forgot about the appointment and so am a little, underprepared for it…
:: Laxyn was already scanning him as he talked, and he could see her expression change just as he was talking ::
Laxyn: ?
::She was trying to change the subject, which Torrin thought was most civilized of her::
Torrin: No, nothing else really. Im generally pretty healthy, although I could stand to spend more time in the gym.
Laxyn: ?
Torrin: Oh heavens no! ::He worried his reaction was too strong, she seemed a little bit shocked by how emphatically he denied his own involvement with Starfleet, and so continued :: I am just along for the ride, my husband just got stationed here as a security officer.
Laxyn: ?
::Damnit, the conversation had just started, and she had already touched a nerve ::
Torrin: Why yes, Senator Edral Xind is a Torrin, but we are not close relations
::It was misleading, but not technically a lie. He was not close with his father. ::
Laxyn: ?
Torrin: Well I was born in Leran Manev but I moved to Vrans fairly early, have you ever been to Vrans?
::Laxyn was obviously uncomfortable with this question. Vrans had a (well earned) reputation for being Trills singular rough city, in stark contrast to the rest of the planets refined and clean metropolises. The city accounted for nearly 60 % of reported crimes PLANET WIDE, and the haughty and elegant citizens of Leran Manev or Mak'ala generally saw the compound-like insular university campus as the only thing of value in the city limits. People went to Vrans looking for education, or looking for trouble.
Torrin's fondness for the place was largely due to this phenomenon. Vrans was actually physically quite beautiful. Its buildings were generally more ancient the cities of better repute, it was on the beautiful amethyst shores of the Uzonn Ocean, and it was close to more waterfalls than any other city on Trill. It also had the decided advantage of being the perfect place to avoid encountering relatives of political prominence and renown. Additionally it was a good place to avoid encountering people who knew things like that Senator Xind's family name was Torrin, before his joining with the Xind symbionet. ::
Laxyn: ?
Torrin: Haha, I am not surprised, the city has a bit of a bad reputation Im afraid. I did my PhD at Grazhall.
::Laxyn looked relieved, which amused Torrin. Grazhall was a convenient cover for his other reasons for living in Vrans for so long, which were generally considered less acceptable by most::
Laxyn : TAG
