Keehani’s eyes snapped open as she awoke from her fever dream. She rubbed her forehead to try and remove the sweat, but it just smeared it to make it worse. Her eyes looked sideways to see some faces, before she pushed herself up slightly from the bed. The
made her feel dizzy, and she slowly allowed herself to lower back down onto the pillow.
Wong: Hey, Keehani. Welcome back. How…. How are you feeling?
Keehani: ::Wearily:: I can’t hear you. It’s as if you’re all whispering from afar.
Ukinix(B): Just rest, Cousin... we'll sort this out.
Still in shock, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
Keehani ~~ I had a vision. Of my home, the Piri Islands. The drones came and made the birds in the forest communicate. They could suddenly share information with each other psionically, like we can. ~~
Ukinix(B): ~~ Psionically? That should be impossible... they wouldn't have the brain anatomy for it... ~~
Siyel: ~~ It's improbably but not totally impossible, Commander. Non-telepathic species have been known to learn how to communicate telepathically... look even at non-Betazoids who become mates with other Betazoids... ~~
Ukinix(B): ~~ Even if that's true, why would the drones want to make the birds telepathic? ~~
Keehani grabbed her forehead as she felt Tani directing her focus towards her.
Lekasa: ~~ You said you were back home in the Piri Islands... maybe that's not what the drone is doing here on Idrustix. ~~
Keehani: ~~ I believe it was a story. Told by the bacteria, in terms I would understand. I think the Trenvonn drones were responsible for making the bacteria sentient at some point in this planet’s history. But now they’re trying to kill it, and they don’t
understand why. ~~
Ukinix(B)/Lekasa?/Siyel?: ~~ Response ~~
Keehani: I can’t feel anything. ::Panting nervously:: This isn’t right.
Ukinix(B): ~~ From what Kivik and Carter told us, these Trenvonn believe the bacteria are responsible for a great plague... ~~
She felt conflict within Wil.
Ukinix(B): ~~ Only their medical ethics don't care if we're just statistics in their greater mission. ~~
Keehani: I can’t feel anything. ::Panting nervously:: This isn’t right.
Wong: I’ve seen this happen before. I just administered the current iteration of the inoculation. Although, this time given the effect of the beam we’ve both been hit with, it might take longer to get you back to where you were before.
Keehani: ::Squinting:: Wong?
Wong: As I’ve highlighted earlier, I do have an improved version of the inoculation in the works. The simulations seemed to be promising. I think it might be our best shot… for both of us.
Despite Wong’s mouth moving, Keehani only heard the words “highlight”, “improved”, “promising” and “shot”.
Keehani: By the Four, I’m only hearing part of what you’re saying-
She interrupted herself when she sensed Wong was feeling unwell. He grabbed his jacket and ran outside.
Siyel: ~~ Where's he going? ~~
Wil looked in the direction where Wong had left before turning back to Siyel and the others with a grim look.
Ukinix(B): ~~ I think unfortunately I know... ~~
Keehani closed her eyes, and rolled onto her side to rest. What seemed like minutes was much less than that when she was awoken by the sound of Wong’s voice.
Wong: We have a problem - there’s a drone outside. And it’s looking for something.
Keehani didn’t need to understand every word to know what Wong was saying.
Keehani: ::Grim tone:: Us.
Ukinix(B): We need to defend ourselves.
She watched as Wil grabbed two phaser rifles, handing one to Tani.
Ukinix(B): You can handle this?
Tani slowly took the weapon from Wil’s hand.
Lekasa: ...yes. I've fired one before.
Keehani went to shout “no” to Wil, but nothing came out of her mouth.
Ukinix(B): Just hold it steady when you shoot with both hands.
Wil turned to Ikaia.
Ukinix(B): Lieutenant Wong, you stay here and tend to Keehani. Mother Siyel can help you communicate with her more easily.
Wong: Response
Keehani: Be careful, both of you.
He looked back at Tani and gestured for her to follow him to the opening to the outside.
Ukinix(B): Let's go!
It wasn’t long before Keehani felt the hut vibrating.
Keehani: What is happening?
Siyel/Wong: Response
Keehani rolled back onto her side.
Keehani: I feel cold. Really cold.
Siyel/Wong: Response
The First Secretary closed her eyes, and let herself fall into a sleep, unable to fight it anymore. As she faded out, she hoped that the rest of the crew in the camp would be able to hold off the drone, and that the crew of the Quimby would be able to return
to help out…
