OOC: All thoughts and feelings belong to the character.

((Private Patient Room, Medical Center, Mezzanine Level))

The sound of the door opening drew her from her meditation, and she opened her eyes, focusing on the calm.

Rosek-Skyfire: oO Stay professional. Stay professional. Oo

Orrey: Lael, it's about time you got in here.

She silently thanked God that no one else was present to witness the informal exchange, which she suspected was part of the reason he’d dropped rank and formality in the first place. But it was that formality and rank that she’d hoped for. It allowed her to separate her professional feelings from her personal ones.

While his nonchalant teasing had been attractive once upon a time, now it just irritated her. She felt that he used that casualness to avoid talking about issues. She wasn’t one to sugarcoat and thrived on feelings and instinct, which she suspected had caused a lot of problems for them. She also wasn’t fond of talking about feelings. She bottled them up until they exploded into a chaotic tempest of words she hadn’t meant and poking to force him out of his shell before he was ready.

He was logic and she was emotion. Without understanding, patience, and compassion, the two were like oil and water.

Orrey: Can't hide forever. I have minions now and a decent relationship with station security. ::chuckling as he settled on the stool in the room:: So what does bring you in?

She recognized the attempt at humor to lighten the mood and offered a soft, short laugh that she hoped didn’t come across as condescending. The gesture was more of a nervous reaction than anything, an effort to chip away at the barriers she’d instinctively erected since he’d entered the room. She took a breath and forced her racing thoughts to calm.

Logic. She needed logic. She’d learned long ago that successful communication with Jansen meant putting reason before feelings.

Rosek-Skyfire: ::smiles:: Primarily a check-up. That last mission left me with some lingering pains. I’m not sure if they’re from the pregnancy or something more specific.

She forced herself to relax so he could perform any examination quickly and efficiently, reminding herself that any physical contact was purely professional and part of his duties. However, this didn’t stop her from casually running a hand through her hair with her left hand to ensure he saw her wedding band. While he knew exactly how to push her buttons, he was the sort to respect that boundary. Besides, he probably had someone, too, and wasn’t interested in a dramatic woman with the emotional range of a teaspoon.

Professionally, with the right boundaries and patience, they could get along well enough to get the job done. Personally, well, those boundaries would take time. She wasn’t expecting friendship, but at the very least a rapport and trust that would allow them to do their jobs without their past interfering.

Rosek-Skyfire: Mostly my lower back. Normally, my pain management program keeps that to a minimum. But I’ve had to make some changes since I found out I was pregnant with my twins. ::grimaces:: The physical changes from the pregnancy have put extra stress on some areas. It’s also causing some flare-ups with my knees. It’s all manageable, but that doesn’t mean it’s not distracting and a touch annoying.
