((Sickbay, USS Kepler, - en route to UAW territory))
When Iko raised her hand, and then coughed profusely, he moved over towards her, bending down a little to look her in the eye and make sure she was ok. But the coughing sounded bad. And, from all reports, it was consistent with what some other patients had experienced.
Juriton: Are you okay?
Wong: Iko, are you alright?
At first she nodded, but that quickly turned into a shake of the head. He got down on his haunches, genuinely concerned for Commander Iko.
Varati: Hang in there, Bec! The hypospray is almost ready!
The only thing that the Commander could manage was--
Iko: Ahhh $#@%...
Wong: Varati, can you get me an anti-emetic? It should be the hypo with the green band.
The doctor used their clearly advanced tricorder to scan Iko.
Wong: Hang on. We're going to take care of this.
Varati: ::to Ikaia:: Aye, it should be finished. It has some salt spray in it, hopefully to soothe the cough. I hope that helps a little.
He decided to try to lighten the mood a little, in his own casual way.
Juriton: Your crew certainly does love cursing. ::shrug:: Hey, whatever gets your ship racing, right?
That didn't seem to go down well. He didn't mind.
(Besides, it *was* an accurate observation).
Wong: Varati, can you please grab me that sample kit from off the counter as well? We're going to need it.
Varati: Here it is! Everything is ready, Doctor, eh, Chief Medical Officer...
Juriton moved over to one of the Enterprise crew, a fellow Terrellian from a different continent, that was on a biobed.
Juriton: Hello Ensign, what's your name?
Yalrees: Talias-Gron-Yalrees is my family name, Commander. Yalrees is my given name.
(OOC: Yalrees is an NPC, anyone can write for them. Oh wait--)
Juriton: When did you become infected?
Yalrees: 3 days ago, while I was working duty shift in cargo bay 3, commander ::coughs::
Juriton nodded, then sat on the end of the biobed, and observed the Ensign to also give him a little company. He did not look well.
Wong: Okay. That was the anti-emetic. How's your stomach?
He turned his attention to the Starfleet officers.
Varati: ::to Ikaia: Let's hope it works. We absolutely have to stabilize them. Perhaps the samples will give us the right answers for an antidote. ::to Bec:: The effect is immediate; the salt mist reduces the urge to cough.
Iko: I feel it, don't worry.
Yalrees: Is... is that true about the-- ::coughs:: --DNA?
Juriton turned his attention back to the UAW Ensign, then ruefully nodded.
Juriton: You didn't hear it from me.
Who was he kidding? "They" would figure it out eventually.
Wong: At least we now have one more live sample if there's one small silver lining.
He turned back to see Wong retrieving a sample from Commander Iko's "gift". He screwed up his nose a little. oO ew Oo.
Varati: ::to Ikaia:: I think we've collected enough samples? ::to Bec with a soft smile::Thank you for the valuable scientific contribution; hopefully, we can obtain relevant data from it.
After a smile there was a big swallow from Iko, before she whispered to Varati.
Iko: Don't make me laugh...
Wong: Bad....
He turned his attention to Wong.
Varati: ::to Ikaia: What is it? What did you find?
Juriton: What's bad, Doctor?
Wong: Bad as in the proteins are starting to stitch themselves together. As in we are running out of time.
Varati: Do they get tangled up? Can we artificially stabilize them? With sugar or some kind of polyols? And then break them apart again at the crucial points?
Bec just looked between Wong and D'Cyra. She wasn't liking the sounds of any of this.
Juriton: Sugar or polyols will slow them down, Lieutenant, and that's good thing. But not stop them. We'll still need to address the underlying problem, the DNA compatibility. It's like... ::looking back at Yalrees with concern:: disqualifying someone from a race while letting them win it.
Wong: What this means is that if this continues at the rate that it is, this will go from maybe having a macrovirus on our hands to absolutely having a macrovirus on our hands.
Varati: ::to Ikaia:: Then we need to act now... Bec, how are you? Is the urge to cough and the tension already subsiding?
Iko lifted her hand for a moment.
Iko: Mostly.
Juriton: How long do we have, Doctor Wong?
Wong: I estimate we have roughly four hours tops to find a treatment before it becomes a macrovirus.
He looked back at Yalrees, whose eyes were closed, breathing uncomfortably.
Varati: Four hours is four hours... so let's go! We don't have a moment to lose.
Iko: Whatever you need at this point. Especially if it's going to help any of the others here as well.
Juriton looked at the other beds. One housed an enlisted Illidarian psychological specialist, and another a Yalitian Lieutenant JG Engineer.
Those rushed few years of "preparation" by Astrofleet to get their ships launched were now taking a toll on the crew of the Enterprise. It wasn't fair. He felt some guilt that he wasn't sick, and the Starfleet EV suit would protect him-- he hoped.
He failed at stopping the UAW government to slow down. It wasn't his fault they were in the state they were in. But that didn't mean he couldn't help, he owed that much to his fellow crew members.
Juriton: ::Looking back at Yalrees, speaking to Wong/Varati:: What do you need?
Wong: Response
Varati: ::to Juriton:: Could you please get us samples from your various crew members? That would be a huge help, thank you so much! ::to Bec:: Please let us know immediately if your condition changes in any way, okay? I'll get another cough syrup...
Juriton immediately nodded, gently patted Yalrees on the shin a few times, then stood.
Juriton: Of course.
He looked around, to see a few sample extractors on a shelf nearby. He moved to grab them, before first heading back to Yalrees.
Yalrees: It's... my breathing... ::coughs, panting::... getting harder.
Wong: Response
Varati: ::to Ikaia:: Should I check Bec's samples to see if I can somehow stabilize the clumping proteins? Then we might at least have something to combat the mold and be able to contain it.
Wong: Response
Bec looked up at Wong.
Iko: You're in charge.
With one sample done, Juriton handed the first extractor to Varati with a pained smile, before moving to the Illidarian patient.
Varati/Wong: Response
Just as he was taking the sample, an alarm went off. Juriton pivoted on his foot, looking around.
Yalrees: ::faintly:: Juriton...?
The Commander dropped the sample extractor, then moved over to Yalrees' biobed, placing a hand on their shoulder, trying to comfort them as they coughed and wheezed.
Juriton: ::Pleadingly:: Doctor?!
Varati/Wong: Response
Yalrees: The mold. I saw it some days ago-I didn't- ::cough:: I didn't know what it was and I was drowning in other engineering work. The ship was falling apart since we left Spacedock.
Juriton: ::Shaking head, under his breath:: They should never have launched her.
Varati/Wong: Response
Yalrees: Panel E-452?
Iko: I'm pretty sure that was the one...
Yalrees: Ship systems went first. An infected neural-gel pack must have gotten damaged. ::cough:: Physically. Like a tear. It would have been contained otherwise.
Juriton: ::To Yalrees:: Do you mean, tampered? Or it looked like a natural tear?
Varati/Wong: Response
Yalrees' eyes closed as he coughed and wheezed, before they went still. Juriton felt their shoulder drop from his hand, as the Ensign's body went heavy on the biobed.
The alarm turned into a constant flat line noise.
Juriton: ::To Wong:: Doctor, help!
Varati/Wong: Response
He stepped back from the biobed, and placed his head on his helmet in the area of his forehead.
Iko: Please say that information was at least helpful...
Juriton: ::gobsmacked:: It... it.. ::sad huff:: it was, yes. The packs are inferior, but the casing used... ::shake of head:: Either something breaks it down, or that pack was tampered with.
The Commander crossed his arms, and dropped his head.
Varati/Wong: Response
There was a comms call from a Starfleet officer.
Hopper: =/\= Ikaia, Bec, how's it going down there? =/\=
The timing couldn't have been better, or worse, depending on which way you looked at it.
Wong/Iko: =/\= Response =/\=
Juriton placed his hand on his hips, and huffed again, before placing his gloved hand on Yalrees' shoulder once more.
Hopper: =/\= I'm sure you did everything you could. ::Brow furrowed in a troubled expression:: Ikaia, have you learned anything about this pathogen that might help us find a treatment? Before there are any other casualties? =/\=
Wong: =/\= Response =/\=
Hopper: =/\= Well, keep at it. All other considerations are secondary. Figure out how this pathogen works and find a way to stop it. Contact Commander Taelon and see if he's learned anything useful too. =/\=
Ashwood/Seleya: Response? ((Optional, and can add =/\= comms =/\= tags or just local bridge conversation.))
Wong: =/\= Response =/\=
Hopper: =/\= Bec, hang in there. I'm going to need you on your feet, especially if the Astrofleet doesn't respond to our attempts at peacemaking. =/\=
Iko: =/\= Response =/\=
As he looked at Yalree's body, Juriton's sadness turned to resolve.
Enough was enough.
Ashwood/Seleya: Response? ((Optional, and can add =/\= comms =/\= tags or just local bridge conversation.))
When the comms call ended, he slowly moved over to pick up the dropped sample extractor, before he stood still - then looked down at his wrist, and pressed a button that was on the suit.
Juriton: =/\= This is Commander Juriton of Astrofleet, looking to speak with Captain Ertmo. I know he's on board. =/\=
He handed the extractor to Varati--
Juriton: I'll be right back
--before heading out of sickbay into the hallway..
((Corridor outside sickbay, USS Kepler))
Ertmo: =/\= Response =/\=
Juriton: =/\= Sir, as a senior member of the Enterprise crew, I need to inform you that one of our crew has just died from the pathogen. =/\=
Ertmo/Ashwood?/Hopper?/Seleya: Response
Juriton: =/\= Ensign Yalrees. An operations officer. Terrellian, just like me. Sir, Astrofleet... I think you have an idea of my feelings about it. We're not ready. This proves it. =/\=
Ertmo/Ashwood?/Hopper?/Seleya: Response
Juriton: =/\= The gel packs are our own DNA. We may as well have rigged every Astrofleet vessel to explode, Captain. =/\=
Ertmo/Ashwood?/Hopper?/Seleya: Response
