((Hopper’s Apartment/Temporary Ops, Habitat Ring - a few minutes after Char’s accident))
On top of everything that was happening - Taelon being inhabited by the lifeform(s), Char in serious medical trouble, Wong being chased by a vole-tribble-unknown lifeform hybrid mased together in the shape of Barberra’s head, and Iko’s team working on modifying torpedos to create a “path” for the lifeforms to enter into the realm that Wil didn’t really understand other than it being related to quantum mechanics...
Klaxons sounded from the consoles to alert them to another eddy heading their way. Wil paced over to a console.
Ukinix: =/\= Ukinix to all personnel. Huge Eddy heading our way, the biggest one we’ve seen. It’s originating from the benamite field. Five minutes away. =/\=
Rosek-Skyfire: All right. We're going to need increased shields and quickly. Pull from wherever you have to, but try to keep life support intact. Give a heads up to all potential affected sectors.
Wil was glad that Niev had joined them, having a scientific perspective was going to be crucial in not only understanding how to get Amity through the crisis they were facing, but to keep their solutions grounded.
Galanis: Sir… the magnitude of the eddy correlates with the spike in psionic activity reported by Lieutenant Wong. Whatever’s going on, it’s reacting.
That made Wil raise his eyebrows... was the lifeform just upset, and this was one of its “emotions”?
Bobded: We can try. But with the amount of power we have right now, it’s going to get rough.
Wil nodded in agreement.
Ukinix: Shields aren’t going to cut it. We may need to disperse the wave somehow.
Rosek-Skyfire: Hmm. ::to the others:: Thoughts?
Galanis: We’re not going to be able to block it with brute force alone.
Bobded: We aren’t going to be able to get enough power to the shields under its current power output
He had to agree. But the psionic angle was interesting.
Ukinix: Aitas mentioned that shoring up mental defences against telepathy helped. Can we treat ourselves as a “brain”, and put up similar defenses against the lifeform?
Rosek-Skyfire: ::pauses:: From what I understand of the human brain, electrical signals jump between neurons to create activity in the brain that results in the creation of memories and storage of new information. It requires a delicate balance of excitatory and refractory periods. We need a way to use dampening fields to our advantage. This would help us protect areas of the station. ::to Galinis and Bobded:: Is there any way to do this without losing power to critical systems?
Galanis: The station is running itself thin just trying to keep up with the storm. I’m no Engineer, but I can say any sort of significant action is going to require some sort of trade off.
Bobded: We may have to cut life support to evacuated and non-essential areas. I used to do that regularly when I raced yachts.
Rosek-Skyfire: ::nods:: All good thoughts. Anything we can put into practice?
Wil crossed his arms, listening.
Galanis: If we viewed the entire station as some kind of biological organism… yes, sir. I think so.
It was making more sense to him. They had been trying to engage with and protect themselves from the lifeform using technology. If they treated the entirety of Amity as a lifeform, that could help another lifeform, they could then potentially help them.
Bobded: I’m not a doctor. You’re going to have to fill me in.
Galanis: We can modulate the station’s dampening fields to emit a high-frequency neuro-suppression pulse. Theoretically, we can phase it to match the psionic signature of these creatures.
Bobded: I suppose it stands to reason considering that the entity did find its way into our systems. They should be a close enough match.
Ukinix: ::To Lael:: Commander, isolate that frequency based on what we have in our systems, the more accurate, the better.
Rosek-Skyfire: Response
Galanis: It would act as a psychic faraday cage. Essentially… we’d be giving the station a tinfoil hat. It won’t stop the wave itself, but it just might convince these entities that we’re ‘gone’.
oO Tinfoil hat-- Does that mean the lifeform isn’t real and is just a government conspiracy? Oo
Wil chided himself momentarily. Of all the times for his brain to come up with a quip...
Bobded: Ah! A disappearing act! That’s a good idea.
Ukinix: It’s sounding like a winner to me.
Rosek-Skyfire: Response
Galanis: There’s just one issue, sirs… it would leave our shields drastically weakened while active. Until the entities are confirmed clear, Amity would be nearly exposed to the neutronic radiation.
There was always a “but”. Then again, that’s what Starfleet was all about. If it was easy, more people probably would have joined. Or... less?
Wil bit his bottom lip. They had been inoculated, and most of the skeleton crew were in EV suits. The people he worried about most were Jansen and Char, and whoever was with them. Being exposed to high levels of radiation while performing surgery probably wasn’t ideal.
Bobded: Then we would need an actual faraday cage for ourselves.
Ukinix: How.
Rosek-Skyfire: Response
Graak operated the console in front of him, showing blueprints from a building... a shop. His shop.
Bobded: Back when I built my shop, I had the breakroom fitted with its own faraday cage. It’s literally the only place in my shop like it.
Rosek-Skyfire/Galanis: Response.
The Betazoid shrugged.
Bobded:I have to protect my employees and well…. Myself. But of course, for a station this size, you’re going to need something a lot bigger.
Ukinix: ::He clicked his fingers:: The climate system for the habitat ring. It’s not just for the days and nights we get in each district, it sets the atmosphere, ambient temperature and the gravity, especially in the ShiKahr district. We can jury rig it. ::Moving over to console:: It won’t be perfect, and it means weeks of repair, but it should protect us from most radiation.
Rosek-Skyfire/Galanis: Response.
Bobded: Like I said before, we can shunt power from life support systems in non-critical areas that aren’t occupied by anyone and divert that to the faraday cage.
Ukinix: ::Nodding:: Do it.
Rosek-Skyfire/Galanis: Response.
Aitas: =/\= Ukinix, this is Aitas. Lieutenant Taelon has recovered enough to assist with the data. You should be receiving recommendations for more efficient shield refinement. =/\=
Ukinix: =/\= Perfect timing, we’re gonna apply it right now. We’re going to try hide ourselves and get the lifeform to where it wants to go. Ukinix out. =/\=
He turned to Niev momentarily.
Ukinix: Lieutenant Galanis, analyse that data and make the shield adjustments.
Galanis: Response
Ukinix: ::To Lael:: I’ve got Palais-Bourbon, Marrakech, and San Francisco climate segments reprogrammed. Ready when you are.
Rosek-Skyfire: Response
Ukinix: Life support system status, Graak?
Bobded: Response
Ukinix: =/\= Ukinix to Iko. Torpedos ready to fire? =/\=
They were blind to most systems. He wasn’t sure if they’d been fired yet or not.
Iko: =/\= Response =/\=
Ukinix: Niev, you get to practice what you preach. Emit that suppression pulse when it’s ready.
Galanis: Response
Wil changed console screens, as the huge Eddy hit Amity. He grabbed the console trying to hold on, as the floor shook, as if trying to rattle his teeth out of his head. Bulk heads creaked outside of Robin’s apartment sounding like tremendous thunder, as groaning echoed throughout the ring. The consoles went dark, and sparks flickered from somewhere nearby.
But a few seconds later, as the wavefront suddenly seemed to calm, the consoles flickered back to life, and the floor vibrated to a dull shake. Wil flicked to the low-res sensor screen that had originally showed the incoming eddy.
Ukinix: The Eddy’s broke up into multiple fronts, dispersing away from Amity.
Rosek-Skyfire/Bobded/Galanis: Response
Another Eddy formed just Outside of Amity, heading straight for the benamite field. To Wil’s surprise, it *shrunk*, then disappeared as it hit the field.
All that remained outside was the storm.
Ukinix: =/\= Ukinix to Taelon. Is the Vole Mass still communicating? =/\=
Tael0n: =/\= Response =/\=
Aitas?: =/\= Response? =/\=
Ukinix: =/\= Good work. Head back to Ops. It looks like we’re alone with just the storm again. Ukinix out. =/\=
Rosek-Skyfire/Bobded/Galanis: Response
Ukinix: Now it’s just us and the storm. Let’s hope it passes in a few hours. Let’s reset systems as best we can, and start compiling a repair list.
Rosek-Skyfire/Bobded/Galanis: Response
((Four hours later, Outside Orrey’s apartment, Rixx district...))
The back of the storm had just passed Amity, the lifeform was gone, and whatever systems that could be rebooted were coming back online-- minus the habitat ring climate system, which would take several weeks to repair. Many of the residents were going to have to stay on Idrustix for that time.
Looking around, the ring looked eerie. Dark, and the usually pretty sky above was just dark metal, with poles and components connected to the roof that were normally hidden were now visible and ugly.
A full damage assessment of Amity was going to take time. He wondered what other repairs they were going to have to do.
Wil pressed the door chime to Orrey’s apartment, but nothing happened. Apparently not everything was back online yet.
So he knocked. And when the door opened...
Ukinix: Hey, Medical Centre is coming back online as we speak. How’s Char?
Orrey/Moore/Char?: Response
