Aitas: It seems they’re threatening the Vaadwaur with a warp core detonation.

That made Taelon sit up and turn toward Aitas.

Saavei: Considering the amount of unrestrained energy an exploding warp core generates, it would certainly cause me to take notice were I commanding one of the Vaadwaur ships.

Ukinix: Patch comms through.

Dupont: Aye, Commander.

Robin’s voice carried a bit of static with it at first, though it remained recognizable.

Hopper: =/\= If what we’re reading is correct, our lead ship is preparing to close the underspace rifts in this region of space. It won’t be long before they get them all closed – and at that point, retreat ceases to be an option. So, do you want to chance a close encounter with that warp core, or leave well enough alone and get while the door's are still open? =/\=

Ukinix: Oof.

Saavei: I do not believe she is 'bluffing'. Detecting a large energy buildup.

Vathrik: =/\= You are outmatched and unwelcome. Flee while my stewards still offer you the courtesy of retreat. =/\=

Ysal: =/\= You ask me to forgive a grave insult, Prime Claimant. =/\=

Vathrik: =/\= The doors close, skrall. Choose quickly. This core does not care about your pride.  =/\=

Ukinix: Who is *that*?

Aitas shook her head. Saavei didn't know what a 'skrall' was but the inflection made it sound like an adjective or title. Perhaps a vulgarity. She didn't recognize the speaker's voice either. Male. Someone the Commander had found in Underspace, perhaps, wherever the Daintree had been. Likely another Vaadwaur, given the exchange. Saavei was too busy regulating power flows and keeping the ship from blowing itself up to pay much attention to arguments between Vaadwaur. Otherwise the Daintree's warp core wouldn't be the only explosion in space.

Saavei: The topic of an interesting conversation with Commander Hopper, no doubt.

Ysal: =/\= Very well, Starfleet. We withdraw. Do not seek to enter our territory again. =/\= ::A pause.:: =/\= We will send an escort to retrieve our Prime Claimant. If he has been harmed in any way, there will be consequences.  =/\=

Ukinix: Good, bugger off-- ::turning to Aitas:: “Prime Claimant”?

Aitas: It appears to be some sort of high ranking Vaadwaur title. Perhaps a rough translation.

Ukinix: Report? And are you both okay?

Taelon: I’m, um, fine, sir. ::A pause.:: Saavei’s leg is still hurt, but Aitas is the worst off..

Saavei: My leg is adequately treated. The First secretary requires more immediate aid.

Ukinix: Aitas, I’m going to get you medical attention ::tapping on console:: then we’ll drop you off at the Medical Centre once we get back to Amity. That’s an order, and I don’t care that you’re FDC.

Saavei was glad Aitas didn't argue the point.

Aitas: Yes, Captain.

EMH MKVII: Please state the nature of the medical--

Aitas turned slightly, leaving both her bloodied clothing and the bruises forming on her face clearly visible.

EMH MKVII: ...shoes.

Saavei: Her shoes are not medical devices, doctor. ::raising an eyebrow::

EMH MKVII: ::To Aitas:: Well I can see the problem. ::Reading display on tricorder:: You’re bleeding.

Aitas nodded.

Aitas: A more major laceration to the leg, yes. Some other cuts, and possibly a minor concussion.

Saavei turned back to her console.

Saavei: Emergency repairs are holding. Compromised areas have been evacuated. The warp core is still fragile.

Dupont: The Vaadwaur are heading towards the remaining rifts. ::Turning over her shoulder:: They’re leaving.

Ukinix: Whaddya think. Have we seen the last of them?

Taelon: I, um, highly doubt it, sir…

Aitas: I have to concur. We don’t know how long underspace in this area will remain unstable, or to what extent they can compensate for it.

Saavei: All worthy points of research in the future. The Vaadwaur are a prideful species and unlikely to forget their withdrawal here today. It could be considered a defeat, which they may not be willing to let stand.

Given the actions of the Vaadwaur in the past, and Saavei's own tactical analysis, they would likely wish to re-establish their reputations as a formidable military force. 'Losing' a battle with Starfleet could conflict with that. Ergo, they would change the narrative or seek to redress the issue later. Absent other factors, it would be wise to prepare for the possibility of future hostilities with them.

There was a flash on the screen, just about in time to match Robin's countdown.

Ukinix: Is that warp core detonation?

Taelon: Um, aye, Commander. Warp core detonation confirmed.

Saavei: I concur.

Ukinix: ... oh no.

Taelon: The Daintree is still on sensors, sir. I, um, would assume that was the threatened detonation Commander Hopper mentioned.

Saavei: The explosive range exceeded one thousand megatons.

Taelon: The Vaadwuar have entered Underspace. Let’s hope they, um, stay there for awhile…

Aitas attempted a nod, and had to brace herself against the back wall.

Saavei was torn between continuing to maintain the ship and assisting Aitas to medical. Were the Independence-B not in such a dire condition, it would be an easy decision. For now that EMH would have to serve to get her to a... real doctor.

Dupont: Aye, sir, laying in a course for the Outpost.

As it was, Saavei felt her head tingling with what might have been the onset of a migraine. The Independence-B was shot to pieces and Surak-knew how much better Amity Outpost had fared. Her thoughts went to the people she knew who'd almost certainly been there and how some of them might have been seriously injured or even killed during the assault. The stress of the moment felt like it might bubble up, before she forced it down by feeding all of it into the fire within the void she created in her mind. There would be time for meditation later.

End mission for Saavei.
