Seleya: A pleasure to meet you.
Varati: And how are you liking it here on Amity? Have you been able to recover a bit from the stress of the last few days? Landing here in the Delta Quadrant must have been somewhat unexpected? …
Seleya: Yes, slowly but surely. I was hoping to be asking some of the commanding officers if there were things I could do around the station to help.
She had absolutely no idea what Seleya's actual role was. Rumors suggested she worked for the intelligence service. D'Cyra had viewed this euphemism with skepticism ever since childhood... "Intelligence" - well, it usually referred to classified information, highly sought after and often costing lives. How many of these "intelligence officers" had she observed back home... and Seleya simply didn't look like she belonged to that circle. In fact, she knew practically nothing about Kazleti.
Varati: Oh, our commanding officers and especially the FDC certainly have enough questions; there's bound to be a lot of PADDwork to do. … Just enjoy your free time here at Amity. Most of the time, we don’t have nearly enough of it. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to relax and unwind here.
Seleya: I just got to ask, are you sure you are alright? You took the fall between the two of us? Just want to make sure I don’t need to rush you to sickbay.
D’Cyra carefully brushed the dust off her skin and her sports clothes. Luckily, it had been a soft landing, and she had a ‘thick skull’ anyway.
Varati: Thanks for asking. Well, my head is still a bit throbbing, but it's okay now. I should probably avoid any further collisions for the time being. ::chuckles:: The fall on the OPS was thankfully more of a scare than an injury. And I'm glad I don't have to go back to the sickbay right away.
She looked at her dirty outfit and then glanced up at Seleya, blinking because the artificial sunlight was slightly blinding and quickly reviving the memory of the headaches she had been suffering from for days.
Seleya: Of course, so long as you are alright. ::She paused:: If you don’t mind me asking, you introduced yourself as D’Cyra of Varati, for the Kazleti the second name is our clan name. Is Varati a clan name, or does it mean something else?
Oh, that was a rare question. And she was surprised herself that she had introduced herself with the "of". Normally she didn't, because these old titles of nobility and/or honorifics no longer meant anything in many worlds.
Varati: Yes, everything's fine... I've survived worse falls. Although running over guests isn't really one of them.
D’Cyra shrugged briefly and a broad smile appeared on her lips, while she made that "you-know" gesture with her eyes.
Varati: Well, normally Orion people address each other by their first name and nickname, perhaps with a title. Family names are usually only used for well-known and respected families. And the Varati and the Sinno families can look back on a long and distinguished tradition in the diplomatic service. Yes, it's the clan name of a more or less well-known family. But I don't really place that much importance on it... I'm neither a "Prime" nor do I hold any special honorary title. ::pauses:: But if you pay attention to it and address it, then it's probably similar with the Kazleti?
Her parents and older siblings held the titles... officially, she was allowed to be addressed and written to as "The Honourable D’Cyra of Varati," but that wasn't important to her in the world of Starfleet, in fact, it was rather embarrassing, even though she certainly didn't want to forgo the indirect diplomatic privileges...
Seleya: Response
D’Cyra listened with interest to Seleya as she spoke about her people's traditions. Did the tendrils on her head move in time with her speech, or was that just a coincidence?
Varati: Oh, I didn't know any of that. You meet so many people from all sorts of different cultures, and in the end, you know so little about them. Fascinating, but sometimes dangerous too. I think you're the first Kazleti I've ever met in person. I don't think I saw many during my time at the academy.
Seleya: Response
The longer they talked about the history and culture of the two nations, the better she could recall certain events. Many nations had suffered similar fates. D’Cyra always found it fascinating to learn new "old" stories in order to develop a better understanding.
Varati: I just heard that there was a terrible natural disaster hundreds of years ago, is that correct? And that the Kazleti subsequently had to leave their home world? Thousands of years ago, our home planet, Botchok, faced a similar fate, but it was a horrific nuclear war that claimed the lives of almost 80 percent of the population... Let's hope something like this never happens again – nowhere.
