Jakarn: We’ll have to inspect and repair your apartment when you feel up to it; for now, and as always, you’re welcome to stay aboard.
Aitas: The inspection is already on the list. As for the rest, well, we’ll see how bad the damage is.
Jakarn: Hrm. You’re sometimes devastatingly unhelpful, my dear.
He’d sunk into the couch, and did so even further, arms crossed in what was almost a pout. But his worry and discomfort was genuine; talking with Taelon was hard. There was so much left unsaid, wounds old and deep that both of them struggled with.
Aitas:I have a hard time talking about these things with Aurelio and he’s only seven.
Jakarn: I’ve never been good with that aspect, I’m afraid. Your little one is terribly clever, though.
Aitas: He’s clever enough to think he can figure everything out and enough of an empath to judge the intentions of others. I suspect he’ll get himself in trouble with the both of those, one day or another.
Jakarn: He’s got a good support network and will….well, I’m confident he will turn out well. ::His smile was thin, wan; sad and resigned at the same time.:: Taelon…well, you know him about as well as I do, I think.

Jakarn: What can I say? He’s done well enough on his own, but there’s…oh, well, there’s just too much in the air, I suppose. I ought to have -

He looked away for a moment. Jakarn was rarely vulnerable, rarely so openly upset, but he knew Aitas well. And she, through her telepathy and empathy, had a better understanding of the depths of his regret.
Jakarn: I ought to have intervened. To have noticed. But I didn’t, and now the damage is done. And I’ve no idea how to even begin rebuilding what was never there. He barely speaks to me, even when I try. It’s painful for him, too, I can tell - but he’s learned to live the way he does.
