((Bridge, USS Independence-B))
Helm: One of the Trenvonn vessels near the border has started moving toward us, sir. Estimated time of arrival is seventeen minutes.
It seemed the Trenvonn were as impatient as anyone with the matter.
Aitas: I can make sure to mention the Grand Expert’s presence in the announcement. I am not sure how a conversation would go between her and the Vaadwaur directly.
She frowned, very slightly. That she had some understanding of the Trenvonn position did not mean it was always conducive to diplomacy.
Ukinix: I think that’s a good idea. They might be seventeen minutes away, but at least the Vaadwaur will see they’re inbound.
Seleya: Hopefully it discourages them from acting aggressively.
Aitas gave that a small nod. They might not have known the full details of the Vaadwaur technology, but the Trenvonn were a demonstrable power in the area. And, given their history, the Vaadwaur were unlikely.
Orrey: =/\=Could it be worth shutting down most of the ship and drifting through. Would it reduce damage? =/\=
Saavei: =/\= Reducing non-essential systems temporarily to reinforce shields and structural integrity would do so, yes. =/\=
Wong: =/\=Then we should go for it, right?=/\=
Shanaak: =/\= I concur. =/\=
Aitas stood there in place, feet firmly planted, as she listened to both the comms conversation and read through the relevant documentation via Fureri.
Orrey: =/\= Going back to the EMP we could empty some sections of the ship and try to ensure we take hits in those “dead” areas to contain the damage. Like when the entity was guided through Amity’s systems. =/\=
Saavei: =/\= As you theorized, doctor, reducing the power load in those sections would reduce harm to any electronic systems. Shields would remain our best defense. =/\=
Seleya: =/\= So long as the EMP burst does not manage to take out the shields. It should also be noted, even if the damage is reduced, EMP can still damage electronics that are without power.=/\=
Wong: =/\=Then it would stand to reason we should put more power to the shields, right?=/\=
Aitas: =/\= I will defer to the relevant experts on the matter. =/\=
They had multiple scientists, an engineer, and an intelligence officer with a tac/sec background. Her input was only useful if she had relevant information to offer.
Ukinix: =/\= ::Tapping at console:: Extending Commander Orrey’s idea, If a phase torpedo does get through our defences, could we somehow *direct* the torpedo to hit an evacuated area of the ship? Kinda like old school decoy flares, except we take the hit where it doesn’t matter. =/\=
Saavei: =/\= Without knowing the specifics of the torpedoes targeting scanners, it is difficult to say. Evasive patterns to direct likely impacts onto more heavily armored sections of the ship would be recommended. Crew can evacuate less-armored areas of the ship prior, in the event we have a hull breach. =/\=
Seleya: =/\=As was said, it is difficult, but torpedoes do come with preferential targeting. And this is also not taken into account if the Vaadwaur launches a salvo targeting different areas of the ship. Maintaining maximum distances to the vessel to give our pilots the best reaction time to possibly maneuver the ship would be our best defense, but would make it harder to use our own weapons. =/\=
Wong: =/\=I’m just going to point out that we’re trying to enter the underspace - we can’t fly into it at just any awkward angle. We still need to be careful as to how we approach it.=/\=
Taelon: =/\= Response =/\=
Ukinix: =/\= Commander Taelon, we’re going in, start a countdown from ninety seconds. We have a crew to rescue. =/\=
And there it went. Aitas didn’t let her expression shift at all; the decision was made. They’d simply have to manage the consequences.
Taelon: =/\= Response =/\=
Ukinix: =/\= Good luck. Ukinix out. =/\=
Ukinix: ::to Aitas:: First Secretary, broadcast that message. Better they know and we see any early reaction, than them be surprised and us being blindsided.
Aitas: Sending. ::she had Fureri arrange the details, routing the message from her badge, and remained in her position.:: =/\= This is First Secretary Aitas aboard the Federation Vessel USS Independence-B. We have Grand Expert Shanaak with us as a representative of the Trenvonn High Council, and are seeking to enter underspace for the purpose of retrieving our missing crew. We request that no one interfere with our mission of aid. =/\=
Ukinix: Commander Orrey, work with Lieutenant Wong to work out the best areas of the ship where we can take an EMP hit and reduce casualties. Guide the evacs yourselves if you have to.
Orrey: Got it.
Ukinix: Lieutenant Seleya, ready countermeasures, standard and improvised. If the Vaadwaur come knocking, we need to be rocking.
If not for the Trenvonn ship, Aitas would have put those odds reasonably high. But with assistance on the way…well, the Vaadwaur would have to tread far more carefully in this area for some time. Unless they were truly desperate. Or foolish.
The latter was unfortunately so hard to predict.
Seleya: Aye, Captain.
Ukinix: =/\= Bridge to all hands. We will be attempting to enter underspace in around sixty seconds from ::eyeing console:: .... mark. Follow the directions from Commander Orrey and Lieutenant Wong as to where you should move to. Ukinix out. =/\=
Ukinix: Let’s go champs. We move to red alert at the first sign of trouble, whether from mother nature or the Vaadwaur. Helm, set a course, coordinate with engineering.
Helm: ::tapping console frantically:: Aye, sir.
Aitas finally moved, placing herself toward the back of the bridge where she could more safely brace herself. The Independence-B felt terribly small at the moment.
Orrey: Approaching the rift.
Seleya: At this time the Vaadwaur ship is maintaining distance at least.
Aitas: They’ve likely noticed the Trenvonn vessel by now.
She kept a thought on that through Fureri; the ship was moving at a brisk pace, but she didn’t have enough information to know if it could, in fact, move faster.
Or just what might prompt it to do so.
Ukinix: Response
Seleya: I have the shield harmonics rotation protocol ready. Weapons are not on powered, but are on standby. I do have the targeting data downloaded from Operation Brightstar. -Hopefully- we will be able to shoot them down before they reach us.
Orrey: Everyone brace for the failed attempt.
Aitas: Bracing.
She’d been tossed across a bridge once; it had come rather too close to killing her for comfort. And the medical team didn’t need more injured personnel to attend to.
Ukinix: Response
The ship shook, but it did not move enough to throw Aitas away.
Orrey: Structural integrity is holding. Shields took a jolt but recovering nicely. Hull stress contained to Deck Four…mostly Aft…could be from the engines still receiving power.
A rough attempt then, but hardly unmanageable.
Seleya: Response
Orrey: Sending the alert to leave stressed sections once quick repairs are done. Then we will close off sections three through five and reroute traffic incase of failure during the real jump.
Ukinix: Response
Orrey: Not receiving any reports of injuries. Everyone knew their job and stood their ground.
She took a moment to reach out with her empathy; to see if she could feel any useful insight.
Aitas: And the state of the rift?
Seleya/Ukinix: Response
There was a sudden flash of what looked like shadow against the stars, a flurry of information at the back of her thoughts. A brief, distant sense of what might have been panic.
Aitas: Secondary rift opening! Brace!
The ship jolted, nearly throwing her forward into Wil’s chair. Her grip tightened on the table at the back, firm enough to leave the impression of her fingers in the metal. Something sparked, and those sparks drifted down across her clothing, adding the scent of smoke to the air.
Seleya/Orrey/Ukinix: Response
Aitas allowed herself one deep breath before speaking. There was, as ever, little space for her fears when there was work to be done.
Aitas: More convincing than intended, perhaps. My injuries are minor. How long until the Trenvonn ship arrives?
She could smell someone’s blood in the air; the helm officer looked a bit worse for the wear, though still upright.
Seleya/Orrey/Ukinix: Response
Aitas: Has there been any reaction from the Vaadwaur vessel?
She turned her attention to the viewscreen, though she didn’t step far enough to the side to put herself out of easy reach of one handhold or another.
Seleya/Orrey/Ukinix: Response
