((Flashback, 2396 – Earth, San Francisco, Starfleet Academy))
Ikaia abhorred hurting people. In fact, he much preferred helping people instead of hurting them. It’s one of the many reasons why he didn’t like self defense or tactical classes. He stood in the training facility nervously knowing the possibility of what awaited him. He looked around at the scenery. Appeared to be set up to mimic somewhere outdoors. Before he could take it in further, he heard a voice.
Hopper: ::Jogging over:: Ikaia? Ikaia Wong?
He looked over in the direction of the voice and there stood a shorter woman (then again, many were short in comparison to him!) She had her hands on her hips and she was looking up at him.
Wong: Oh! Aloha! Have we met before?
Hopper: ::Grinning:: Robin Hopper. We have a mutual friend!
Ikaia tilted his head curiously.
Wong: We do?
Hopper: Yep – and she told me you were enrolled in TAC110 this semester too. Said I should look for you. I thought maybe we could, you know, ‘buddy up’? Keep an eye out for each other?
He thought hard for a moment. He was trying to figure out who it was. Alieth was a top contender.
Wong: Huh? Wait. Who was it that—-
Instructor: Attention, Cadets! Eyes on me, please. We’re about to get started!
Ikaia's attention was snapped onto the instructor as she called everyone to attention.
Hopper: ::Turning back to Ikaia:: So, what do you say? Wanna be study buddies? ::Chuckling:: Not that this class will probably involve that much ‘studying’... But I’d feel a lot better knowing I had a friend at my side.
He leaned over slightly to talk to Hopper.
Wong: I think I’d appreciate having a friendly face.
((End Flashback))
((Present – Amity Outpost – Security Center))
Ikaia still abhorred tactical training. That part hadn’t changed since he was a cadet. What had changed was that at least he had a good friend he’d be doing this with. He saw Hopper standing outside the security centre waiting for him. He strode over with what remains of his morning coffee in hand. She waved at him as he walked over
Hopper: Aloha! Good morning. ::Wink:: Caffeinated?
He held up his cup briefly.
Wong: As always. ::Sips:: Anyways, are you ready to do this?
Hopper: Okay, well, let’s not keep Commander Iovianus waiting… ::Leading the way inside:: …Thanks for agreeing to do this with me. I still feel a lot better knowing I have you by my side.
Ikaia entered with Hopper to see that Iovianus was waiting for them. The commander was just wearing his security tank top today. It made Ikaia feel a little overdressed being that he was in full uniform.
Hopper: Morning, Sir.
Iovianus: Good morning to you both.
Wong: Good morning, Commander.
Hopper: Lieutenants Hopper and Wong reporting for tactical training, Commander. ::Smile:: I’m sure we both have some skills that could benefit from the refresher.
Iovianus: And you have no qualms with being armed? I know some medical professionals prefer not to be.
Of course, Ikaia had qualms. But he also had to accept that being armed from time to time was a necessary evil. He just hoped he never had to use that skill very often.
Wong: I’m certainly among the sort who doesn’t particularly like being armed. However, I’ve accepted that it’s part of life in Starfleet and in the galaxy in general.
Hopper: Where should we begin?
Iovianus: We are going to start with something simple. Some range fire exercises. We need to see what we are starting with. So follow me.
Ikaia followed Iovianus with Hopper deeper into the Security Centre. They walked past the central brig and onwards to another room. It was a small holochamber that had a pair of tables. Ikaia was a little surprised to see Richards standing next to one of them.
Iovianus: Mister Richards has agreed to help out today in exchange for his own chance at recertifying and getting some practice in.
Richards: Response?
Wong: Aloha, Nathan! Glad to have you join us!
Hopper: Response?
Iovianus: So. We are going to start with the very basic. ::motioning toward the table:: Here is the standard issue weaponry. We have the Type 3 phaser rifle, the smallest one you see, you will see a lot of here on Amity. The Type 1 personal phaser is a small concealable ideal for diplomatic situations and discreet dealings.
Richards: Response?
Iovianus: Standard issue for my Security forces are what are called the “dolphin” style of Type 2 phasers. My personal preference leans toward the Aquila pattern Type 2 as it is similar to my sidearm as a legionairre. ::to Wong specifically:: We have spoke about this before as it comes in a non-lethal variety as well.
Ikaia nodded.
Wong: I remember you talking about them before and I’ve since decided to take up that suggestion. Whenever I need a sidearm, I usually take my NL Aquila with me if I have to take a sidearm.
Richards/Hopper: Response?
Ikaia approached one of the tables. He checked to see if there was an NL Aquila there.
Wong: Speaking of the NL, do you happen to have one?
Richards/Hopper/Iovianus: Response.
He carefully picked up one of the type-1 phasers off the table and studied it in his hands for a moment.
Wong: Reminds me a bit of our classes back at the Academy, doesn’t it, Hops?
Richards/Hopper/Iovianus: Response.
Ikaia finally turned to the rest of the group as he set the phaser back down carefully.
Wong: So what will you be having us do today? Is it just target practice or something more?
Richards/Hopper/Iovianus: Response.
