((Spacewalk on exterior of USS Independence-B, by aft port torpedo tube))
Saavei had never particularly enjoyed spacewalks when she'd been in the Academy. Without a firm sense of 'up' and 'down', it could be difficult to orient oneself if one accidentally looked away from the hull of the ship they were standing on. She'd never been prone to motion sickness as a child but her first time in space, as a Cadet, had taught her the meaning of the term in short order. She'd nearly been sick inside her helmet, and it was only stubborn refusal to give the Tellarite with her the satisfaction of doing so, which had let her keep her stomach. Primarily by swallowing her Plomeek Soup back down as it had come up. It certainly hadn't tasted as good the second time around. This time it was slightly easier, with the Independence-B stationary at its dock and the Outpost giving a sense of orientation.
From the exterior, the ship was covered in carbon scoring, scorch marks, and other signs of damage. Commander Ukinix had been around often, helping the teams out, and it had given Saavei a chance to appreciate that he'd come from Engineering as well. She was curious what had led him to decide on switching to Command, but it would have to be a conversation for another time. He had his duties to attend to, least of which was appeasing his cousin after what (Saavei was sure) would be an emotionally charged diplomatic incident. 'On the plus side', as humans so often said, the Grand Expert hadn't been killed and the Vaadwaur had been driven to retreat. They'd need to fabricate a new warp core for the Daintree but that shouldn't be overly complicated.
It was back to double shifts, the same as it had been when the neutronic storm had passed them by. In truth, Saavei didn't mind the work. Her social skills were still developing and she felt most comfortable with a hyperspanner in one hand and a loose conduit in the other. Rebuilding what was damaged, fixing what was broken, these were things which gave her the most satisfaction. She'd been relieved to hear the command staff, D'Cyra, Aitas, and the others had made it through in one piece. Not everyone had been so fortunate. And now, floating outside the port-side torpedo launcher exterior, her mind flashed back to the two Crewmen who'd died on the other side of the hull when the Vaadwaur had attacked.
In the midst of that loss, there was also cause for more positive experiences. One of which was that a new Ensign had joined the crew and was part of the Engineering division herself. Saavei hadn't had time for proper meetings as yet, but that was changing in short order, as they'd been assigned to assist with repairs on the Independence-B. Saavei floated just off the torpedo launcher, looking at the bent shape of the hull around it. Her repair kit was attached to her back magnetically, her safety line to the hull of the ship itself. She looked over to her new co-worker, Ensign Saelis Bryn.
Saavei: The damage is severe. The computer stated the tube was 'collapsed' during the battle. The end of the launcher appears to have been completely destroyed. The loading arm in the aft starboard launcher also needs repairs.
Bryn: Response
Saavei motioned to the micro- (and not so micro) hull breaches in that section as well. Between the currents of Underspace, Vaadwaur phaser and torpedo fire, and random debris that may have still impacted them, the Independence-B had been torn up a good deal. Emergency force fields weren't active in those sections as the doors leading to them had been sealed, so the port torpedo room could begin to be repaired. She turned her head to look at the other woman.
Saavei: I understand you were part of the battle outside of the Outpost?
Bryn: Response
Saavei: Certainly a memorable way to begin your tour of duty.
Bryn: Response
