Ertmo: We didn’t know as much as we thought we did, certainly.

His head turned back and forth as he took another sip of his juice. It was clear that his people had more to learn from the Federation.

And, as well, that they shouldn’t simply assume lessons from the Federation blindly either.

Ar’a’Dal: We must send a positive and, above all, peaceful signal with these negotiations. Small but effective gestures, so that progress is visible to all sides. The Federation wasn't created in a day, as you say? ::humming:: Did we understand that correctly?

Ashwood: Response

Ar’a’Dal: Captain Ertmo, would the UAW accept an official apology from the High Council? If we officially affirm that the pathogen could never have mutated – and this is confirmed independently by Federation scientists? ::humming:: Would that be in the spirit of mutual understanding?

Ertmo: We’d take the apology. That would be understood.

Aitas nodded.

Aitas: Perhaps best to speak less of your intentions for the pathogen; it is its impact that the UAW cares most about. A simple apology seems wise.

‘We didn’t mean to’ was likely to come across as an avoidance of responsibility rather than a mere explanation, given the circumstances.

Ashwood: Response

Ar’a’Dal: ::humming:: I understand. If we are fundamentally in agreement on these points, then yes. Our technicians will hand over the data on the pathogen to the Federation’s scientists.

Ertmo nursed his glass of juice a bit, but turned his head back and forth in what might have been a nod.

Ertmo: We can agree on that.

He’d probably ruined Mokto’s reputation, and perhaps his own. But falling afoul of the Federation wouldn’t look good to the citizens of the UAW, not at all.

Aitas: Thank you both. Is there anything else before we move to the final arrangements?

She handed Ertmo another glass of juice.

Ashwood: Response

Ar’a’Dal: Then we should issue a general communiqué as soon as possible. Would you be willing to undertake this task, esteemed First Secretary Aitas, esteemed Special Envoy Ashwood? ::humming:: I hope this is done with mutual understanding?

Ertmo: I must support the pursuit of mutual understanding.

He wasn’t sure he’d like everything he found there, but it clearly was far better than not knowing.

Ashwood: Response

Aitas: Let me see where Captain Hopper is at, and then I can—

She was promptly cut off by a statement from said Captain Hopper.

Hopper: =/\= This is Captain Robin Hopper, of the USS Kepler to all people now present in the Zumaris system. With support from the United Federation of Planets' Diplomatic Corps and Starfleet, representatives of the Zumardi High Council and the United Alliance of Worlds have met and conducted negotiations for a ceasefire in the current conflict. While these conditions are temporary, and will require continued negotiations between all parties in good faith, your people have already shown that this kind of collaboration is possible, despite your history... =/\=

Robin stepped forward, making her presence even more obvious on the viewscreen.

Hopper: =/\= The Zumardi High Council have agreed to share their research on the pathogen that is now affecting the UAW's ships and crews. Our scientists are close to synthesizing a cure, and we've found a technical solution that should render the virus inert... With the Zumardi's help, I'm confident we will be able to provide aid that will stop this pathogen in its tracks and prevent further loss of life.  ::A brief pause::  The Alliance has made concessions as well. Captain Ertmo, of the Astrofleet's flagship, Enterprise, has ordered the arrest of Admiral Mokto, until diplomatic talks have reached their conclusion. Under his authority, the Federation is now doing exactly that... =/\=

Hopper: =/\= Admiral Mokto is now in our custody, in accordance with Alliance law... Captain Ertmo, representative To Ar'a'Dal, I'd like to invite you now, along with First Secretary Aitas of the Federation Diplomatic Corps and Captain Nicolette Ashwood of Starfleet, to speak to the ceasefire agreement that has been negotiated and to call on your people to stop military action immediately. =/\=

Ertmo’s eyes flickered to blue, and he stood up a little straighter. The frills on his back rustled slightly beneath his uniform.

Ertmo: =/\= Thank you, Captain. Our current agreement involves the exchange of reparations for deaths on both sides, the UAW giving up any claim to Zumaris or its local system, and aid from the Zumardi in stopping this pathogen. I would like to thank Captain Peronis of the UAW Drake for her support in this endeavor, as well as my counterpart in these negotiations, Senior Scientist To Ar’a’Dal. =/\=

Ar'a'Dal: =/\= Response =/\=

For her part, Aitas kept herself almost behind both Ertmo and Ar’a’Dal. Their work needed to be the symbol here; an agreement between them both, rather than something simply laid down by the Federation upon them.

Aitas: =/\= Such situations cannot be fully solved in a day, but what these two envoys have built can become a strong foundation for the future. One I look forward to seeing you both build. =/\=

Her dress fluttered slightly, spilling small petals down upon the floor.

Ashwood:  =/\=  Response =/\=

Hopper: =/\= What was accomplished here today was just the first step in a long road to mutual respect. But the first steps have been taken... Great civilizations – those that value peace, prosperity, and equity for all – are founded on these kinds of agreements. The Federation is proof of that. Now, I hope that you will allow us to support you as your worlds find your own path to that... greater understanding. =/\=

Just what form that might take remained to be seen. But it was, indeed, a new beginning for it.
