((Outside “Whispering Wall” Colony, Planet Imza-4521-L, Barossa Nebula))
Vanlith: Well I guess finding them is going the be the key then.
As Torvi continued to look around, she came to an angled wall, which had a gap wide enough for a human to easily walk past. She figured that the angled wall was to deflect the blast in case the generator had a bad day. It opened up to a corridor. She turned on the light on her rifle for some extra illumination and peered around the corner.
She eyed a door and what seemed like a stairwell heading downwards that branched off to the side.
Ylvor: There’s a corridor around here Commander, and a stairwell. Might get a bit lost here…
Richards: Let’s try and stick together. We don't need any of us disappearing or getting lost. ::Pointing at the screens:: I found what this station is. There are several pylons dotting the perimeter of the facility. Each one with its own small power source. This building acts as a hub between all of them.
Nathan tapped away at the consoles, Torvi wasn't entirely convinced that he really should be, there could be counter intrusion software for unauthorised users, sending alerts throughout the network. However they had gained access to the building fairly easily, perhaps given the uber clandestine nature of this site that they, perhaps in their hubris, hadn't given a flying tribble.
Richards: If…what I'm seeing is correct, the colonists are, or were, able to access this system remotely from within the facility and disengage specific portions of the energy fence for traversal in and out of the colony. That would explain why it’s so clean in here. Because no one comes out here. ::beat:: Would also explain why it’s generating so little power if it’s only used as a relay station of sorts.
Vanlith: I've only ever seen something so remote when there are safety considerations.
Ylvor: To be fair, its how I'd do it. Have levels of redundancy, especially if I had unlimited resources.
Nathan moved his hand across the displays effortlessly and then suddenly.
Computer: Deterrent Field disengaged. Pylons One through Seven powering down.
Richards: Well that’s one problem out of the way. We can get into the colony now. ::Looking down at his tricorder:: Still not getting a very good reading on anything though. The shielding in this building might be blocking scans. ::Looking towards Torvi:: This corridor and stairwell. Does it head in the direction of the colony?
Vanlith: ::Looking down at her PADD:: I think so.
Char looked over to Torvi, seemingly for confirmation.
Ylvor: Seems to go in the general direction, they could split. Might just be access avenues.
Richards: Then I say we do a little exploring, yeah?
Vanlith: urm ::looking between them:: what's the best order for this?
Ylvor: If the good Commander doesn't mind, I will take point.. ::She looked at Nathan sternly:: Lieutenant if you could please take the rear. Make sure to look behind periodically.
Nathan put his hands up in defeat, a smirk crossing his face momentarily.
Richards: I'm not going to argue with the one with the bigger gun.
Torvi gave a smirk at the gesture, oO Damn straight Oo
Vanlith: Ok rear. I got the rear.
Ylvor: Stick close, eyes and ears. On contact with anything, find cover. If there are no objections, let us meander.
Nathan made the "after you" gesture, to which Torvi squinted at him momentarily.
Richards: Meander we shall.
As Torvi progressed further, she could see the hallway finished rather quickly and ended with what was labeled 'Storage' on the door, effectively a dead end.
The stairwell needed care to traverse tactically, Torvi did her best to proceed down slowly. The eye doesn't catch slower movement as much. oO Act like you belong.. with your rifle at low ready.. Oo she thought to herself.
She gestured for the others to head down and join her. The corridor went on for around 50 metres before making a sharp turn. Again could be designed for blast deflection. It was only wide enough for one person to walk through comfortably.
Seemingly clear, Torvi pushed on. Taking a moment to look back at the other two before turning back around, Torvi's blood ran cold. She stopped in her tracks about halfway to the turn in the corridor. A dark figure stood alone, near the turn, immobile. Their face mottled with the sickly tendrils of the Frontier Day assimilation, their eyes blackened.
Torvi stood immobile herself.
Vanlith: What is it? What do you see?
She snapped out of being frozen in place, and looked again. Nothing, the figure was gone, her brow furrowed. She could feel her heart beating in her chest. It had seemed familiar, but reminding her of something she didn't want to remember.
Ylvor: I.. thought I heard something, nevermind. Let's pick up the pace.
Richards: Right. Let’s keep going.
Vanlith: ::quietly:: okay
Turning the corner the corridor widened slightly and looked to open up into another chamber ahead.
Ylvor: What do your scans say of the room ahead? Anything?
Richards: Seems all clear to me.
Vanlith: I have nothing any different from before.
Ylvor: Unless you have another suggestion sir, you clear left, I'll take right. Char, follow us after the all clear. If we go down you'd need to contact the rest of the away team.
Richards: We won't go down. We got this.
Vanlith: Right yeah of course you won't.
Rounding the corners at almost the same time, Torvi scanned with her rifle at the ready. Nothing moved, nor blinked or even looked out of place. An orderly looking mess hall type space, not a cup or plate out of space. Unused or incredibly well maintained. The chairs were stowed on the table tops, as if someone had just done the floors.
oO What is this place, why is it here in the first place and why hasn't it been used? Oo
Richards: Left clear.
Ylvor: Right clear.
She slung her weapon, letting it hang in front of her chest, but still resting a leisurely hand on the pistol grip.
Vanlith: I'm coming in.
Torvi looked back to see the Lieutenant enter, who was not looking entirely at ease, understandably so.
Richards: ::Looking back at the panel:: It looks like this is the first floor of some sort of underground complex. One out of…huh, only 4. I was expecting more. Don’t top secret projects usually have some kind of city hidden away underneath a mansion in the woods? ::Beat:: I think I saw a movie about that once…
What was before them told a story, that they had the immense resources to make an extensive base, without knowledge of the Starfleet units in the area, but furthermore it remains more or less unused, or unoccupied. Was it their plan to have a phased approach to bringing personnel here, what would this place be like when it was fully manned and operational. Torvi tuned back into the the tail end of the conversation and furrowed her brow at the last comment.
Vanlith: Mansion in the woods?
Ylvor: Is this one of those zoombee films you humans are so obsessed with?
Torvi chuckled, now seeing Nathan concentrating on a panel.
Richards: According to this, there is no one here. No life sign readings. Nothing.
Vanlith: And no changes to energy readings either.
Ylvor: Why go to all this effort for no one to be here?
Vanlith: the only place I've ever seen anymore stack chairs like this was a school. It made it easier for cleaners to clean under desks after the kids.
Torvi wandered over to one of the doors at the far side from where they had entered. Pressing the door button, and it swooshed open. It revealed a turbolift.
Ylvor: ::To herself:: I wonder where you go to..
On the back of the turbolift wall there was a small diagram, denoting the level they were on currently, as well as the others underground, but above them was a landing pad, which made her raise her eyebrows. Torvi might be able to get her bearings a little better from seeing the base from above.
Richards: Response
Vanlith: I don't really know what to think. No life signs, weird energy signatures, creepily clean. ::looking towards Nathan:: and not as big as we were expecting?
Torvi turned back to let the others know.
Ylvor: Commander, there's a turbolift here, looks like it goes up to a landing pad, might be something in the flight logs about comings and goings?
Richards: Response
Ylvor: If we were to search the whole base we'd need alot more security teams to fan out, with just us it's slow going. I don't like leaving uncleared sections behind us, but I feel we need to find something tangible soon.
Richards/Vanlith: Response
As the trio piled into the turbolift, Torvi pressed the button for the landing bay level, curious to what they would find.
Ylvor: We should be able to get clear comms to the Indy and the other away teams..
Richards/Vanlith: Response
The doors parted ways, Torvi had her eyes closed to help shield from the expected sudden bright light, and she stepped out quickly, rifle up. Not entirely sure what to expect, looking around, once again as dead as the Flight Training hangar at the San Francisco Academy on a Friday night. But Torvi was sure this wasn't due to the personnel all scampering off for happy hour. Part of the extensive bay was under enclosed, with a large door to shield from the weather and for maintenance, which opened up to a landing pad. A number of the allocated bays were empty, with the others filled with 2 Talon Class scouts. The bay doors being open was against protocol without Flight deck personnel being present. She shook her head confused.
Ylvor: ::Nodding to the Talons:: They don't have registries..
oO Damn peculiar that is Oo
Richards/Vanlith: Response
