((Starfleet OPS, Level 1, Copernicus Center, Amity Outpost))
They'd gone from no information to strong suspicions that Lael hoped they didn't confirm. After Frontier Day, the last thing they needed was another faction trying to wipe out the Federation. That might have been a little dramatic, but one victory could easily give whoever this was enough momentum to keep pushing boundaries until they hit a wall. The Federation was still recovering and the last thing they needed was another war.
Rosek-Skyfire: These developments are very concerning, especially given the proximity to Amity itself.
Varati: Indeed. But as long as we have no evidence of the use of cloaking devices, we literally "see" everything and everyone that emerges from the subspace crease. But… due to their high energy levels, tetryons decay extremely rapidly outside of subspace. Therefore, if there are only small or well-controlled openings in the corridors, they could be missed by the sensors. This would happen if the subspace opening and half-value period were shorter than our sensor cycles. While these cycles vary precisely for such reasons, a residual risk naturally remains.
Iko: I think I am picking up comms chatter. From the Miombo to… someone else. ::looking up:: Not Starfleet.
Rosek-Skyfire: I’m not sure what it means, but we need to work quickly.
Varati: Wait… What?! Not Starfleet? The Vaadwaur or Turei?
She'd ascertained that much just by looking at the frequency. Not one of the ones Starfleet generally used. Their equipment was too sophisticated.
Rosek-Skyfire: If we have any record of frequency ranges either race, we can compare them.
Iko: D’Cyra, Robin’s team has found something, and it kind of matches readings from this ship the others are talking to. A… I dunno… lazy tetryon or tachyon particle?
Varati: Tetryons would be ok and further evidence for perhaps other subspace corridors. But tachyons? That could point to cloaking technologies, weapons, or transporter signals!? We need to know more precisely what the sensors of the Daintree recorded there.
Iko: Can we use that as a start?
Varati: I will switch the measurement intervals of the sensors for tetryon radiation to continuous operation until we know what and, above all, "where" we are dealing with.
Rosek-Skyfire: ::taps in a series of commands:: Here's a little algorithm of mine that will narrow the parameters a bit more to common frequencies and characteristics of tetryon radiation.
Iko: Ohh &#@%.
The expletive caused Lael to look up from her work, her brow furrowing.
Varati: ::to Bec:: What's going on? What did you see, Commander?
Rosek-Skyfire: ::pauses:: Interesting.
Varati: Hmm… Okay, those are identical patterns from the scanners of the two scouts, interesting. And we're finding them here in our area too, great, at least the sensors are all working the same…
Lael shrugged. It was what she'd been concerned about when initially looking at the readings.
Varati: Okay, let's adopt these search matrices for our scanners as well, so that we don't just capture random overlaps. And at the same time, we're scanning for all known warp signatures in the vicinity of these particle clusters. Further heuristic scans will hopefully reveal whether there are any other traces. We probably don't have any current signature patterns from the Turei and Vaadwaur?
Rosek-Skyfire: ::to Bec:: Do we? I can try searching our database, but I don't know much about either. Any hints on what I'm looking for would help.
Iko: Response
Varati: But if that's true... by the Thousand Gods! The continuous scans are only running for a few minutes at most. Here in the nebula, I can see smaller clusters of particles that have risen and fallen. But at the large fold near the scouts... the radiation levels there have been varying but rising sharply in the last few minutes, which means a major collapse is imminent! Something unplanned probably happened when anyone exited the corridor, like knocking over a support pillar or something... The scouts need to get out of there as quickly as possible!
Rosek-Skyfire: ::pauses:: What's the risk to the scout ships? We can't send them on a suicide mission without more information.
Iko: Response
Varati: =/\= OPs to Daintree, Miombo and Independence-B: Whoever receives it first: the scouts must get away from the vicinity of the subspace rift! Immediately! Part of the rift is on the verge of collapse! Get out of there! =/\=
Even if that was somewhat premature... the safety of the teams took precedence over any scientific or political findings.
Varati: ::to Bec and Lael:: Excuse me, but it's better to be a little too cautious than to have the scouts get into unforeseen difficulties.
Lael wasn't overly fond of how D’Cyra had thrown out the order with Bec and her standing right there. While Lael was all for officers taking initiative, the chain of command existed for a reason. The officer could have at least tried to give her reasoning.
Leaping before looking, after all, could cost people their lives. She glanced at Bec. She didn't want to step on toes, but felt the eager young officer needed a reminder of why the risks needed to be weighed carefully.
Rosek-Skyfire: =/\= There's some urgency, but exercise your best judgement. Let us know what you find. =/\=
Iko: Response
Daintree/Miombo/Indy: Response (?)
Rosek-Skyfire: =/\= Understood. Rosek out. =/\= ::to D’Cyra:: All right. Let's see if we can get any more information to pass along. The more they have, the better of an idea they will have of what they are getting themselves into. Informed decisions are key.
Varati: Response
Rosek-Skyfire: ::to Bec:: We don't have much time. Any thoughts on what else we need to look for or any other scans we can run to get more information?
Iko: Response
Varati: Response
Rosek-Skyfire: ::brow furrows:: See if you can adjust the sensors. ::to D’Cyra:: Can we increase their range at all? Get more detailed scans?
