((Sickbay, USS Kepler, - en route to UAW territory))
Wong: Right. Well. That only leaves….
But then she remembered that it wasn't just the Kepler that was affected, but also the team on the Enterprise... who didn't even know what had happened yet.
Varati: We need to inform Saavei and Juriton! And beam them a load right away, even if the gel packs on the Enterprise are already too deteriorated to be frozen…
Varati: =/\= Saavei?! We'll send you a backup in case the gel packs can no longer be frozen... UrCho spray. Better not ask what's in it. =/\=
Wong: =/\=You’re going to need to know what’s in it.=/\=
He had looked over at her with that "I have to tell them"-look.
Varati: ::quiet sigh:: If it absolutely has to be... it's a completely harmless substance and is contained in many medications...
Wong: =/\=It’s a compound synthesized with urine - either synthetic or uh… natural if you can get it from a healthy source.=/\=
With a shrug, he glanced over at her again. She pulled a "it is what it is" pout.
Varati: The main thing is that it works, and quickly... once we have initial scans, we can specify the exact strength for replication.
Wong: Then there’s us. I’d still like to obtain a few viruses as samples for future study. But for now, we need to eliminate them before they grow too much larger.
Was that an ethical problem? Was it even right to keep something like that in a sealed test tube? It was only for scientific analysis, after all. And anyone who wanted to build biological weapons would do it anyway. She, too, would want to see the original data to find out if the original pathogen had actually been harmless. Somehow, the Zumardi and their friends were hard to figure out. Nobody knew what kind of arsenal of biological and other weapons they possessed. All of this could have gone very wrong very quickly...
Varati: We should be careful with that... lest something else develop from this splashing and jumping macro-virus.
Wong: Then the plan is as follows - treat our patients and eliminate viruses as we see them. I’d say it’d be easy. But this is more like conducting surgery while being bombarded by asteroids.
They just needed to get the dangers posed by the pathogen under control quickly enough, before further mutations occurred.
Varati: Aye, aye, Doctor, eh,
Chief Medical Officer. Then I'll quickly mix up some artificial UrCho drinks
for our "Mosquitos"…
With that, D’Cyra turned and programmed the second medical replicator. Artificial urea would do the trick, too. And enough specific alcohol... that would definitely dissolve the protein chains if the pathogen was as harmless as the Zumardi claimed.
A first spray was quickly prepared. A clear liquid that smelled, at most, slightly of alcohol. All that was missing was a test.
A test subject was quickly found... besides Ikaia's helmet and gloves there were enough places where it had "flopped" and this wobbly mass of virus had divided and spread.
Instead of swatting the "things" like annoying flies, she injected the wobblers with a dose of the UrCho spray. This briefly turned golden-brown, then a blue-black clump that collapsed in on itself. A check with the medical tricorder confirmed the final demise of the mutated protein chains. All that remained was a miserable little pile of protein slime.
She looked at Ikaia with a winning smile.
Varati: ::to Wong:: Ha-haa! It works! To the Nine Hells with you, you miserable pathogen! ::pause:: We've certainly earned a cold drink and some relaxation now, don't you think? Want to join me for a summer trip to the beaches of Idrustix?
With an inviting smile, she made him this offer.
But there was one more small thing she wanted the entire crew to know:
Varati: =/\= Varati to all: It works! =/\=
