((Bashir Wing, Medical Centre, Amity Outpost))
Shortrith: I… I'm going to be upfront and admit that I feel a little disconnected from my Klingon roots. My parents tried to instill values of honour and glory, yes, but… sometimes it doesn't feel like me. oO Ever since I changed my name. Oo At times it's strange being the only Klingon on a ship, or in a place, when… most other Klingons were surrounded by their own kind, with their house, connections of their own.
oO In some houses I would be cast out for dishonour. Oo
At least Renaie was still part of a house. It was better than being affiliated with the House of Duras.
Wong: I’m not most Klingons, really. I’m more of a haphazard conglomeration of experiences and peoples. I really don’t feel a strong attachment to Klingoness as I do to my home in Hawaii. If anything, Klingon is just the anatomy and physiology I was born into.
oO Another form of disconnection. Oo
Shortrith: Fair enough. In all honesty, I find more of a home in Starfleet than I did in the Klingon Empire.
Wong: Response
Renaie gave a lame shrug before staring at the couch cushions.
Shortrith: I suppose it's the disconnection that creates some similarity between us, hey?
Wong: Disconnected would be one way to view it. Another would be that you’re just simply connected to something else instead.
He had a point.
They smiled softly before remembering that Wong had recently passed his exams to become a doctor.
Shortrith: Congratulations on passing your exams, by the way. I'm aware they're no small feat. What got you into medicine?
Was it just them, or did he seem uncomfortable about the topic?
Wong: Ah er thank you. As for how I got into medicine, it was through my mother. She served in Starfleet as a chief medical officer. It’s my way of having a closeness to her.
oO Oh, right. People are supposed to have flawless relationships with their parents. Oo
Not whatever there was between Renaie and their parents back in Melbourne.
Whatever it was that caused the argument, and Renaie seriously considering not visiting their parents on the way back to the Alpha Isles.
They tried to give a hopeful smile, but they didn't realise the neutral expression that was on their face.
Shortrith: Are you planning to do anything to celebrate?
Wong: Honestly I…. I’d really rather just keep everything in regards to passing my finals and graduating a bit more low key and with less fanfare.
Shortrith: Fair enough.
oO No need to poke about something he's uncomfortable about. Oo
Wong: Anyways… how about you? What made you pursue the medical arts?
Shortrith: I did stupid things as a child that got me injured a lot, but I always had positive experiences with the medical staff that treated me. They were the reason I wanted to pursue medicine, to pay it forward. And when I added counselling to my workload, I did additional training so I could be deployed in a counselling setting, like I am on the Ronin.
oO Was that too much? Oo
Wong: Response
Shortrith: I suppose so, yeah. Sometimes it's nice to have something that you enjoy, that you specialise in.
Wong: Response
Shortrith: What do you mean?
Wong: Response
Renaie smiled at that, nodding.
oO Can I ask to be friends with him? Oo
Shortrith: Also… Dumb question but potentially would you like to stay in touch after I've left Amity to go back to the Ronin?
They glanced down at the couch they were sitting on, taking a mental note of the pattern and fabric as a way to distract themself if things went south.
Which could quite possibly happen.
Wong: Response
Shortrith: Really, I find you very cool, and someone I want to be friends with.
Wong: Response
Renaie smiled at that, giving an appreciative nod.
Shortrith: Thank you.
Wong: Response
