Galanis: I can’t say you ever fail to give me something to think about, Miss Aitas. Apologies for taking more of your time than I’d planned. Is there anything else you’d like to discuss, or should I allow you to get back to your work?
Aitas: I would appreciate hearing more about your theories on the subspace serpent, if you don’t mind.
Letting out a soft, almost wistful sigh, Niev leaned back and slowly shook their head back and forth. One of their elbows came to a rest on the table in front of them, their chin coming to be propped up on the hand there. It was nice to think about the subspace serpents again. It kept Niev’s mind further from dwelling on what had happened during the mission - the way it kept dragging their attention off what they’d rather be thinking about.
It was no longer a mystery why Starfleet mandated counselor sessions.
Galanis: Theories? That’s almost all we have, really. Theories and some data I fear peer review won’t be kind toward. We know what it was because we confirmed it with our own eyes, but I wish we had some more physical evidence to back that up. Time spent trying to prove they’re real is time we could have used researching how to co-exist with them.
Aitas: Having such creatures wandering about does have implications for local traffic. Especially if they’re drawn to certain leaks. I could tell you a little more about the trick I did with that, if you think it’d be relevant.
That made Niev sit back up subtly, their interest very clearly perked. They’d been so caught up with the research and fallout from the last mission they hadn’t had a chance to spare a thought toward the dramatic feats that led up to the discovery lately.
Galanis: Entirely relevant, Miss Aitas. What you and the others did might well save lives in the future.
Aitas: Pirate tricks, mostly. ::she glanced over at Niev:: Is there any more of that tea left?
Blinking, Niev looked back toward the thermos, scooping it up and uncapping it again. The smell was as fresh as ever.
Galanis: Of course. This tea is known for being surprisingly resilient, even over multiple infusions, despite the freshness of it. A handful of blades will last you all day. ::Pausing for a moment to pour the fresh tea, slightly raising an eyebrow:: You may have to elaborate about these ‘pirate tricks’.
Aitas: Response
Galanis: Quite clever of you, though risky. I suppose that’s why you called it a ‘pirate trick’. I’m assuming where you learned that is classified?
Aitas: Response
Galanis: So your plan did work. But what if it hadn’t? Say the serpents were intelligent enough to detect the trickery. Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to how smart they actually are - perhaps the same method wouldn’t work twice.
Aitas: Response
