Jakarn: She’s had a long time to learn how to use words. Best thing to do is let her know you worry. She often - ::He gestured vaguely with his glass.:: She forgets, I think, that others hope for her comfort. A bit too eager to self-sacrifice, that one.

Aurelio: I’ll tell her. ::a deep sigh:: Grandfather says that too.

Jakarn: Your grandfather is a wise man - and one she is still growing used to, I imagine. They were separated for a very long time, after all.

Aurelio: Longer than I’ve been alive.

Jakarn: Mm.

Jakarn caught the minute shake of Aurelio’s hand. The boy tried to hide it, but it was there. He really was at that age when one first began to understand the harsher realities of life: death, loss, and lies. A rough time for anyone, Vulcan-trained or not.

Aurelio: It’s going to take me so long to learn all these things. And I don’t think I’m ever going to be as good at the words as mom is.

Jakarn: You don’t need to be. It’s a skill, like any other; some you can choose to learn, others you can ignore.

Aurelio: She wants me to learn other things. ::a pause; he shook his head.:: I want to learn other things. Did I tell you about my plants?

Jakarn smiled back, gently.

Jakarn: No, I hadn’t heard too much. Did you get more of them?

Aurelio: Response

Jakarn: You are young, Aurelio; you have time to find out who you are and what you wish to be. And gardening is a noble pursuit.

Aurelio: Response

Jakarn’s smile turned wistful for  a moment, looking into the middle-distance.

Jakarn: It is not a good thing to be surrounded by steel and stone alone; we once brought forests with us, and grew trees and grassland inside of starships. I should be happy to see that again, one day; the Federation relies too much on holograms.
