((Amity Outpost – Medical Center, Crusher Wing, Conference Room))
The investigation into how one Commander Ukinix became two Commander Ukinixes – as well as the equally, if not more, perplexing question of ‘what to do with them both’ – was still underway. Given how much was already known, but how little it felt like they knew, Robin wasn’t convinced that this problem would be solved before their upcoming mission…
Wong: Alright. That brings us to our next question - how do we reverse it? We already know that tachyon interference was at play when Ukinix got separated. I suspect they are the key to this puzzle.
Kivik: And that’s where I’m a little baffled, Ikaia. I doubt it’ll be as simple as going back to the gravity well and reverse-transporting him back into it. ::Sighing:: Though the thought is rather tempting.
Hopper: Sadly, no. I think we’d probably find ourselves with a worse mess than we have now. ::Smirking:: I think we can also rule out sticking both heads on one body and calling it a day.
Kivik: Goodness!
Hopper: Sorry, bad joke. ::Patting her stomach:: I’m just getting loopy because it’s lunch time. I guess the place to start is completing as much of the investigative work as possible first. Let’s figure out, to the best of our combined abilities, exactly what happened – from a physical, mechanical, and medical perspective. Then we can try to figure out how to reverse the process.
Reade: I agree with Lt. Hopper. We need to get each area covered first. It's possible that each area could help us solve this problem.
Wong: Response
Kivik: ::Checking nir PADD:: Well it looks like our request to take a look at the Kwando has been approved, so why don’t we adjourn the meeting and head over there now?
Reade: Great news! That sounds really good to me.
Wong: Response
Hopper: Sure. No time like the present! ::Pausing for a moment:: Uhh, but I’m just going to replicate a snack ‘for the road’.
Tapping the console at the center of the table, Robin sheepishly put in her order.
Hopper: Medium box of curly fries, crispy… And some paper napkins. ::As they materialized:: Anyone else wants anything?
Reade: Hmm, I will grab a medium box of fried rice with basil and chicken… A glass of ginger ale, and some napkins.
Wong: Response
Reade: Shall we head out?
Wong: Response
Hopper: ::Sticking a curly fry in her mouth:: Mm-hmm!
Kivik: ::Rolling nir eyes:: Okay, you two, let’s go. And wipe your hands before you touch the Kwando’s science console!
((USS Kitty Hawk – Shuttle Kwando, Transporter Pad))
Robin, Kivik, and Ikaia all stood watching as Reade wrapped himself around the back of the transporter station. During the mission, control over the transporters had been routed to the Science Console – but the technology to operate the transporters, and the logs, were still stored within the transported column itself.
Robin absent-mindedly licked the remaining fry oil from her fingers before wiping them off with a paper napkin and tossing it into the nearby replicator for recycling. Reade, meanwhile, connected his PADD to the station and began his diagnostic.
Reade: Yup, there are signs of corruption here. Sending diagnostics to your PADDs.
Hopper: That was quick. ::A look to Kivik:: The shuttle must have been under heavy tachyon bombardment. I’m surprised it held together.
Kivik: ::Shrugging:: It barely did. The gravitational forces ripped off our forward emitters and strained the hull pretty badly. I’m told the Kwando won’t be seeing use for some time until Chief Engineer Zhalea and her team can get it repaired. Of course, it’s off-limits right now anyways.
Wong: Response
They all took a look at the data Reade had sent them. Hopper shook her head.
Hopper: So what caused this? Was the MST program faulty? Didn’t want to play nice with the Kwando’s system? Radiation exposure? Tampering?
Reade: Well, it's hard to say at the moment.
Kivik: It’s also important that we found out where the corruption began. Was it in the transporter array? In the console? Or is it just affecting the logs?
Wong: Response
Reade kept looking through the available data. Hopper, even with her background in programming, was having difficulty making heads or tails of it. Things were clearly ‘wrong’ but, after a certain point, it just felt like staring at a jumbled mess. It was remarkable they got two Commanders back and not zero.
Reade: Wait a moment, I think I’ve got something.
Kivik: ::Breath of relief:: That’s good news, Scotty.
Wong: Response
Hopper: What are we looking at?
Reade: Response
Kivik: ::Eyebrows raised:: Well, that’s not the best outcome, I suppose.
Reade’s discovery presented a complication – but also clarification. To Hopper, it seemed like a bit of a mixed bag.
Hopper: ::Shrugging:: At least it gives us something concrete to work off. An idea of where the problem originated.
Wong: Response
Reade: Response
Hopper: Assuming that’s accurate, I think it’s safe to say we’re going to need additional time to figure this out. We aren’t looking at a simple solution here.
Kivik: I’m sorry to say it looks like that’s true. We may have to get ‘creative’ with the solution after all.
Wong/Reade: Response
Kivik: So… Who gets to tell the Ukinix’s?
