((The ‘Terraces’, Varati’s & Saavei’s Apartment, Marrakech District, Amity Outpost))
"Home sweet home." Humans have had some strange proverbs. But it was nice to finally have a few days off after the neutronic storm and the daring double rescue mission in subspace.
And what good was a beautiful, spacious apartment if you couldn't enjoy its benefits? Luckily, the storm had only caused minor damage to decorative items and a few plants. The two of them had planned to redesign the small patio on the lower level anyway; so far, the decorative terrace area had only been occupied by oversized ferns and the strange plant that D'Cyra had once received from Keehani for Christmas. A slightly corroded slab hinted at the source of the gift. A few moving boxes and other clutter, desperately in need of removal, were still scattered in the corners.
Saavei had brought a bag of Vulcan coffee as a housewarming gift. What was missing was a classic coffee maker, one that could grind and brew real coffee. So what could be more natural for an engineer and a technically minded scientist than to build a coffee maker based on a classic design?
The kit had, of course, been in transit for ages, and the numerous missions had prevented its assembly until now. They had cleared the large table in the living area and laid out the kit parts there. The machine and the apartment were supposed to be finished by the big "family dinner" with Aita's family (and Jakarn). But somehow, the assembly was proving more difficult than expected...
Varati: ::to herself:: Attach side panel 32-A to base plate B-3, but not to tab T-5, first attach drip tray DP-4x...
Confused, D’Cyra placed the parts on the table and scratched the back of her head thoughtfully... something wasn't right. She searched among the parts for the assembly instructions.
Varati: Wait… what?! “Le Grille”? … ::to Saavei:: ... are you sure that's the right instruction?
Saavei: Response
She looked in surprise at Saavei, who seemed to have made better progress in assembling her parts.
Varati: Well, I don't know... but apparently the second instruction manual is for a different device...
"Le Gril" – perhaps that was something for Commander Ukinix? After all, they only wanted to build a coffee machine, not a nuclear power plant.
Saavei: Response
Varati: Okay... then I'll download the instructions to the PADD again. But I want a discount for the incorrect instructions! … Hmm, better not, lest this end in another fiasco.
D’Cyra rolled her eyes as she thought about the failed yacht purchase. All she'd wanted to do was lower the price because of a few minor flaws... Oh well, that's water under the bridge. A topic she no longer wanted to discuss.
Saavei: Response
D’Cyra pulled out her PADD and searched again for the correct instructions.
Varati: How did the repairs to the Indy actually go? You guys seemed to have suffered far more damage than the rest of us. I’m so glad we all made it out of the subspace corridors in one piece.
Saavei: Response
