Wong: So you certainly picked an interesting way to spend some off time! We’re doing something with a firing range on the holodeck?

Moore: Not time off, I’m on duty… We’re here to do a weapons requalification, and make sure you’re comfortable using your side arm, shotgun, and all the standard issue phasers.

Kaito knew Wong had training in this; there was no getting out of Starfleet Academy without it. But he also knew that many didn’t keep up their training. He couldn’t blame them; Starfleet was a self defense force after all, a self defense force designed for exploration and made up of scientists, doctors, and explorers. So many were lax on their training… which sadly meant Tactical had to sometimes drag them to the range… Like today.

Wong: Well, I did bring my aquila and my medical shotgun with me as they’re what I use the most.

Moore: Yes, I know you got your medical shotgun, and pistol, but you need to be proficient in all the weapons, from the biggest to the smallest. Otherwise you end up in a situation with the rats because you didn’t grab a rifle, or armed with pine cones because your aquila is too big.

He offered Wong a reassuring smile.

Wong: While I understand your concerns, I hardly think those two situations were fair, Moore. In one, any possible firearms were confiscated and the other, it was uh…. A rodent of unusual size.

Moore: Well, as my Mother once told me, proper triage includes threat negation. Security isn't always going to be there, and you might find yourself in need of protecting yourself, or more importantly, someone you love. You hopefully will never take these weapons off stun, but proper triage includes threat negation.

Wong: Well ah, I suppose it is fortunate that I never take anything off stun.

Moore: And hopefully you never have to, but it is important to be prepared, just in case.

Wong pointed to the entrance of the holodeck.

Wong: Then we should really go see your weapons requalification setup, hm?

Moore: Lead the way.

And with that, they walked into the holodeck. The advanced training program was still running, waiting for the next time trial, but they weren’t starting with that.

Wong: Looks like you’ve been busy!

Moore: ::Shrugging.:: Just a little practice from earlier.

Wong: So what is it that we’re doing first?

Moore: Not with this program. Computer. Load Training Program Phaser Qualification Course, Moore Modification Three.

The Holodeck changed around them, going from a mostly empty holodeck with a table and targets, to an outdoor firing range. It was clearly on a dry lake bed, most likely somewhere on Earth. There was a large table behind the shooting positions; on it were multiple types of phasers, but also non-Federation weapons too. Cardassian rifles, Klingon disruptors, and oddly enough, even slug throwers…

Beyond the table and large sand-filled barriers was the firing range, twenty shooting positions facing targets spaced out across the dry lake bed at intervals of ten meters, twenty, forty, and one hundred meters. Along with targets further out in the distance.

Off to their right seemed to be another shorter range with oddly spaced targets, and a strange-looking wooden building labeled Shoot House.

Wong: Response

Kaito walked up to the table.

Moore: We’re starting here, basic target practice and familiarization. Starting with the type threes, and working our way down.

To some, it might seem like an odd way to learn, but the fact was a phaser rifle was easier to aim and control than a type two pistol style, and much easier than the type one crickets…

Wong: Response

Moore: Pick the one you want, we got everything from older Dominion War patterns, compressions, and of course the newer issued stuff. Personally ::Pick up a Dominion War Pattern.:: I like this one personally. Perfection.
