((Bathroom, Apartment 12-56, Palais-Bourbon District, Habitat Ring))
Wil stood in the smallish bathroom of his apartment, arms crossed, just looking at the shower.
There was nothing wrong with it in principle. It was a dual sonic/water shower that could be switched over, or combined.
But at that moment in time, in the history of the universe according to Wil Ukinix, there was one problem with that shower.
It wasn’t a bath.
((Holodeck 1, Level 1, Copernicus Center - twelve minutes later))
But the photonic replica that sat before him, full of steaming warm water and bubbles, certainly passed for one. It was one of those white ones with the gold legs on it, centred in a computer generated non-descript white tiled bathroom.
With his uniform crumpled on the floor, Amity’s CO enthusiastically stepped in, and lowered himself slowly into the warm to hot water… And as his butt hit the bottom, he let out a sigh of relief, and leaned back, eyes closed, enjoying the warmth.
His troubles melted away… the overwhelming amount of PADDwork suddenly didn’t matter… he slowly, and dreamily, melted into a state of bliss--
Phan’ta’go: =/\= Hello, this is Crewman Phan’ta’go to Commander Ukinix. =/\=
Wil sat up with a start, splashing some of the water out of the full bath-- some of it landing on his uniform.
Phan’ta’go: =/\= Can you hear me? =/\=
He closed his eyes again, but this time not from bliss.
From frustration. He reached over the bath’s edge for his combadge.
Phan’ta’go: =/\= I repeat, Commander Ukinix, can you-- =/\=
Ukinix: =/\= ::combadge trill:: hear you, yes I can Clem Phan’ta’go, what is it? =/\=
Phan’ta’go: =/\= I’m just going to stop you during whatever leisure activity you’re participating in, in Holodeck 1, that’s your business of course-- =/\=
Ukinix: =/\= I’m having a *bath*. At least I’m trying. This better be good, Crewman. =/\=
Phan’ta’go: =/\= “Good”. Not how I would describe it, Commander. =/\=
Wil let out a frustrated sigh, tempted to throw the combadge that was in his hand against the wall.
Ukinix: =/\= Then how would you describe whatever it is that you're interrupting my first bath in 2 years for? =/\=
Phan’ta’go: =/\= A huge EM charged magnetohydrodynamic wavefront full of radiolytic isotopes moving at warp 6 with a shock front and a large magnetic shear forecast to reach Amity Outpost in three and a half hours? I’d call that “critical”, sir. =/\=
Wil stood up, and stepped out of the bath as quickly as he could, dripping more water onto his uniform as he picked it up to rapidly put it back on - but realising he’d need to towel off at least a little first.
Ukinix: ::reaching for towel :: #$%@, #$%@, #$%@, #$%@--
Phan’ta’go: =/\= Commander, Can you hear me-- =/\=
Ukinix: ::fumbling to press combadge:: =/\= Yes I can hear you! Have Commander Hopper meet me in Ops, Ukinix Out! =/\=
((Ops, Level 1, Copernicus - a few mintues later))
With his uniform covered in wet patches, and those parts of his skin underneath feeling uncomfortable, Wil rushed from the elevator lobby area into the operational heart of Amity Outpost. The room was bathed in red, and a klaxon warning sounded.
He rushed towards Robin, who was standing beside a console being tapped at frantically by an Ops officer, her arms crossed in front of her, one propped up to place a hand thoughtfully on her chin. She glanced towards him as he neared and returned her eyes to the console readings, beginning to launch into an explanation of the unusual phenomena approaching.
Hopper: Our long-range scanners picked up the storm from the other side of the protostar nebula– ::Doing a double-take back at Wil:: What happened to you?
Ukinix: Ungh, I was having a bath. This was a better option than turning up in a towel. What have we got.
Iko: A storm, that because we're on a station with moving thrusters, we can't really outrun.
Robin stifled a chuckle and turned back to the readings. She raised a finger towards the display, which showed a three-dimensional map of the region, the borders of the nebula marked, along with Amity and the stormfront.
Hopper: As I was saying, we detected the storm on the other side of the nebula. Its trajectory seemed to indicate it would miss Amity by a few trillion kilometers – but, it seems as it began to close on the nebula, it’s picked up a considerable amount of energy and mass on its near edge, and the gravitational pull of the protostar is dragging that outer edge towards the Outpost.
As she talked, she pointed to the storm’s initial trajectory, then traced the new line, showing that the storm’s edge would now engulf the station.
Ukinix: Potential impact?
Hopper: This is a category five neutronic storm, more than five lightyears in diameter. It consists of plasma travelling at almost warp seven, saturated with radiolytic isotopes which are quite deadly for most humanoid species. As it passes through the nebula we can also expect it’s going to destabilize the orbits of quite a few asteroids, dragging them along with it…
Needless to say, it was going to be a bumpy ride.
Iko: If we bunker down, like really bunker down into one section of the station we might be right, but there's twenty-five hundred people including Starfleet and civilians, plus also the benamite miners that we'd have to squish all up…
Bec turned to Robin.
Hopper: Between our shields and our hull plating, Amity should be able to withstand it if it goes on a full security lockdown – but there’s a definite risk of exposure to anyone left on board. Any other vessels in the vicinity won’t be safe. We’ll need to clear the ‘airspace’ and evacuate the miners.
Ukinix: Then I’m calling it. Implement evacuation plan Alpha-one-one, everyone off of Amity, except for a core skeleton crew.
Robin nodded, as did Bec.
Hopper: Idrustix will be out of the storm’s path. We can direct all vessels to head there and wait out the storm in a secured system. We can fill up the Indy to the gills with Starfleet personnel – and the USS Nightingale hasn’t departed yet. There’s a starliner set to embark for the Alpha Quadrant today as well. We may need to delay its departure, see if they can assist.
It would take a concerted effort, and some tight quarters, but they should be able to get nearly all 2,500 people off the station.
Ukinix: ::To Hopper:: And you’re leading the evacuation, Commander, that’s an order. Get everyone to safety, and you with them.
Hopper: ::Brow furrowed:: Wil, when this storm hits, it’ll be an unprecedented opportunity for scientific research. With all the facilities onboard, there are so many experiments we could run that–
Robin cut herself off. She was getting excited at the prospect of staying, helping coordinate research efforts in the SRC… But that wasn’t her job anymore.
Hopper: ::Quick sigh:: I’ll submit my recommendations to the Acting Chief Science Officer once the Indy is en route to Idrustix. Just promise me that you’ll keep the sensors on, okay?
Iko: As much as we can…
Wil nodded and simply click-pointed to Bec, while still staring at the screen.
Hopper: Oh, yes, and you know, stay safe. Obviously.
That made Wil smile a little, and turn to look at Amity’s FO. You could never take the Engineer out of Wil, and it seemed it was similar for taking the Scientist out of Robin.
Bec gave Robin a nod, and a pat on the back.
Iko: You too.
Hopper: ::Smiling:: Oh, don’t worry about me. I’ll be kicking back with my feet up drinking Centauran Sunsets on the beaches of Idrustix while you two enjoy the space hurricane up-close and personal.
Ukinix: ::Shaking head:: Have one for me, you lucky bugger. ::Gesturing with head:: Go on, get. Catchya on the flip side.
Wil turned to Bec, their new Second Officer was about to become…
Ukinix: Well then, acting First Officer, congratulations. I wish the circumstances were better.
Bec pursed her lips together and nodded. She still wasn't used to the title of second officer yet, so Acting First Officer was definitely an extra whirlwind (to add to the many plasma eddies that would be there in a little over three hours).
But, one perk was that unlike Robin, she was able to stay right here and not fight Wil about having to leave her outpost. Because there was no way in hell that she was letting someone else be part of the skeleton crew in her place. This was her station, and she was sticking around to defend it.
Iko: I'll help go get everyone who's staying aboard organised then, ay?
Ukinix: Yeah. Get in touch with Jansen, tell him and Ikaia to get the crew that will be left behind prepped for high doses of radiation. Contact Lieutenant Taelon, he picked a hell of a time to visit, tell them to get as much sensor information as they can before systems shut down. I’ll contact Lael and work out the best spot to set up a temporary Ops while the storm hits. Sound good?
Bec nodded. It was a hell of a lot to start off with, but they'd only be busier from here.
