((Starfleet OPs, Level 1, Copernicus Center, Amity Outpost))
Rosek-Skyfire: ::pauses:: That I know of, there aren’t any species in the Delta Quadrant that have access to cloaking technology. I think whoever this is has been using subspace to hide from our sensors. It’s either that or a combination of subspace and some kind of technology that obscures their engine trails.
Iko: Subspace emits tetryon radiation, though we haven’t found anything from trying to scan that yet. Cloaks are tachyons and chronitons… I’m not picking up any of those.
Tetryons were a sure sign of some kind of subspace and corresponding anomalies in normal space. In this case, the anomaly in the form of a crease was so obvious that the radiation measurement was simply obligatory.
Varati: That's correct, yes. Wherever tetryons occur and their radiation can be measured, there must be subspace. Outside of subspace, however, these particles decay in irregular decay patterns, which is why they cannot be traced.
Rosek-Skyfire: These developments are very concerning, especially given the proximity to Amity itself.
Yes, the distortions weren't always as obvious as in this case. Besides, there was another problem.
Varati: Indeed. But as long as we have no evidence of the use of cloaking devices, we literally "see" everything and everyone that emerges from the subspace crease. But… due to their high energy levels, tetryons decay extremely rapidly outside of subspace. Therefore, if there are only small or well-controlled openings in the corridors, they could be missed by the sensors. This would happen if the subspace opening and half-value period were shorter than our sensor cycles. While these cycles vary precisely for such reasons, a residual risk naturally remains.
Bec continued to swipe her finger across the console's touchscreen to collect even more data.
Iko: I think I am picking up comms chatter. From the Miombo to… someone else. ::looking up:: Not Starfleet.
Rosek-Skyfire: I’m not sure what it means, but we need to work quickly.
oO $#!@... Oo She hated it when circumstances changed before the situation had been clarified and assessed.
Bec nodded reflexively in agreement, but D’Cyra herself rolled her eyes. They didn't have a plan yet, nothing... There had been so many uncertain details that first had to be analysed and categorized before any recommendations for action could even be made.
Varati: Wait… What?! Not Starfleet? The Vaadwaur or Turei?
The Turei had helped the crew of the Voyager back then, albeit reluctantly. The Vaadwaur, on the other hand, had behaved rather ungratefully, attacking both the Voyager and the Turei, who then retaliated and destroyed the underground chambers in the corridors.
Rosek-Skyfire: Response
Iko: D’Cyra, Robin’s team has found something, and it kind of matches readings from this ship the others are talking to. A… I dunno… lazy tetryon or tachyon particle?
Tetryon or tachyon – that was the question. To be, or not to be.
Varati: Tetryons would be ok and further evidence for perhaps other subspace corridors. But tachyons? That could point to cloaking technologies, weapons, or transporter signals!? We need to know more precisely what the sensors of the Daintree recorded there.
Rosek-Skyfire: Response
Iko: Can we use that as a start?
As a starting point for what?
Varati: I will switch the measurement intervals of the sensors for tetryon radiation to continuous operation until we know what and, above all, "where" we are dealing with.
Rosek-Skyfire: Response
D’Cyra couldn't see exactly what Bec was doing at her console, but her facial expression and subsequent comment didn't bode well:
Iko: Ohh &#@%.
Yes, that was a helpful statement. Not.
Varati: ::to Bec:: What's going on? What did you see, Commander?
She nervously looked back and forth between Bec and Lael before taking the few steps over to Bec's console.
Rosek-Skyfire: Response
Curiously, D’Cyra looked at the display, on which the current data from the sensor scans of the scouts and Amity's own long-range sensors were projected on top of each other.
Varati: Hmm… Okay, those are identical patterns from the scanners of the two scouts, interesting. And we're finding them here in our area too, great, at least the sensors are all working the same…
This sarcastic remark was followed by an annoyed sigh. The fingers of her left hand wandered to her left temple, which she massaged restlessly.
Varati: Okay, let's adopt these search matrices for our scanners as well, so that we don't just capture random overlaps. And at the same time, we're scanning for all known warp signatures in the vicinity of these particle clusters. Further heuristic scans will hopefully reveal whether there are any other traces. We probably don't have any current signature patterns from the Turei and Vaadwaur?
Sensors, scanners, and data. Lots of data. A whole lot of data. For Niev, that would have been a festival.
Iko/Rosek-Skyfire: Response
The sensors must have been running hot by now, the displays were practically overflowing, the data streams were racing across the screen, until a few ominous-looking points appeared on the map: some near Amity at the edge of the nebula, which lit up and then disappeared again. But a larger point far out had been growing ever larger and brighter…
Varati: But if that's true... by the Thousand Gods! The continuous scans are only running for a few minutes at most. Here in the nebula, I can see smaller clusters of particles that have risen and fallen. But at the large fold near the scouts... the radiation levels there have been varying but rising sharply in the last few minutes, which means a major collapse is imminent! Something unplanned probably happened when anyone exited the corridor, like knocking over a support pillar or something... The scouts need to get out of there as quickly as possible!
Iko/Rosek-Skyfire: Response
There was not a moment to lose, otherwise they would lose their friends and colleagues. D’Cyra only hoped that the message would reach the ships in time; at least the Indy, which would serve as a relay station.
Varati: =/\= OPs to Daintree, Miombo and Independence-B: Whoever receives it first: the scouts must get away from the vicinity of the subspace rift! Immediately! Part of the rift is on the verge of collapse! Get out of there! =/\=
Even if that was somewhat premature... the safety of the teams took precedence over any scientific or political findings.
Varati: ::to Bec and Lael:: Excuse me, but it's better to be a little too cautious than to have the scouts get into unforeseen difficulties. oO I just hope this isn't some kind of Frontier Day/Interlink remnant in the form of a second Hekaras corridor... Oo
However, this last thought seemed too far-fetched and conspiracy-laden for her to want to voice it aloud in this situation.
