((Brew Continuum, Grand Mezzanine, Amity Outpost))

Shortrith: Have either of you ever been? To Qo'noS?

Truth be told, Renaie didn't know if Bec had been there since she left for Amity.

Iko: Yeah. Once. Did the usual tourist stuff in the city. ::pointing to Wong, furrowing brow:: But you went off with Keehani and did something else didn’t you?

Wong: Uh yeah. I did. But that’s not important, right?

Iko: I always feel like such an outsider. I know it’s stupid, but…

Shortrith: Your feelings aren't stupid, your feelings have reason.

Wong: She’s right. It’s valid.

Renaie glanced at the other Klingon doctor, raising their eyebrows before taking a long drink of their coffee

Iko: I wonder if that would ever change.

Renaie wanted to give Bec a hug, they really did.

But they didn't.

They couldn't.

They hadn't hugged her since the falling out.

They hadn't spoken to her in the years between saying goodbye and hearing her voice over the comms.

Hugging her felt… wrong.

Shortrith: Hopefully it would.

Wong: Response

Iko: Maybe we should just stick to this trio of klingons in Starfleet, ay?

Shortrith: Yeah. It's nice not being the only klingon on a posting, especially the only medical Klingon.

Wong: Klingons in our line of work is indeed a rarity. I didn’t see any in medical during my time at the Academy. But I did encounter a lot of Vulcans.

Shortrith: If it's not too much of a personal question, Bec, is it because of what your mum did that made you feel like an outsider?

It was the awkward silence that made Renaie realise that it was not the right question to ask.

Wong: Uhhh…..

Iko: I’d be lying if I said “no”...

Shortrith: Yeah… I remember the rantings about her as I started in the Academy.

oO Stop digging your own ::bleep::ing grave, idiot.

Wong: Ah well…. A lot of things can happen at the Academy, right?

Iko: Like, uhm, the reprogramming of replicators.

It was that question that made Renaie pause, glancing at Bec awkwardly.

Shortrith: Um. Well.

Wong: I…. should probably be getting back to work. If there’s one thing about working in medicine, there is no shortage of work as long as there is life around.

oO I definitely said the wrong thing. Why am I so focused on the past? Oo

Shortrith: ::Very awkwardly:: Yeah…

Iko: I’m sorry I kept you, uhm…

He gave them a nod.

Wong: Thanks for inviting me, however. I do appreciate our little chat. Do feel free to reach out at any time.

Shortrith: ::genuinely:: It's nice meeting another medical Klingon.

Wong gave them a polite wave, and walked off. Bec called out after him.

Iko: I hope you guys can be friends.

Renaie was silent, giving a small smile as they avoided eye contact with Bec.

Iko: Not everything is about my mother anymore.

Shortrith: I realised that. I'm sorry. I know I overstepped.

They stared down at the floor, unknowing of what to say.

Iko: You and I have alot to talk about.

oO Finally doing it now, eh? Oo

Shortrith: ::dryly:: What else is new?
