Girls’ Trip - Chapter 6: Predators (Part 2)

Rivi and Tani had made their way to the top of the ridge, and though she wanted to keep moving, it was getting dark now.
They’d managed to use their attacker’s thoughts as a beacon of sorts, as they had previously in the forest. If they could trust the “distance” that he seemed to be from them, they’d be okay.
Coming across a small rock formation, the two women did their best to set up a defensive position to camp out for the night. They decided to take turns sleeping in shifts. Well, sleeping as best they could.
They both only managed about an hour or so’s worth of sleep before they’d wake up again, so it was more like exchanging naps.
It was Tani’s turn now to watch. As the insects continued to buzz and chirp unseen in the dark forest, she was getting nervous. Out somewhere under the night sky, she could hear other kinds of animals making their occasional calls.
She didn’t sense the unseen attacker among them, but she did feel Rivi’s presence. Seeing her friend’s dreams brought some comfort during this tortuous time. It brought back memories of late nights in the dormitories back in Ohmallera and crashing together after long nights of studying–or partying when Tani had managed to convince Rivi to come along.
Her throat was parched, and she decided to head further down from the camp to the nearby stream. She could still sense Rivi clearly from down here, and as she approached the water, she saw the reflection of the three moons above, watching like sentinels. It was a sight that reminded her of being back on Betazed with its three moons.
Taking her gaze from the sky back down to the water, she noticed a little glimmer of light before suddenly she felt a deep, burning pain as a thrown knife plunged deep into her arm, knocking her down to the ground.
She screamed in pain, her yell piercing through the night’s ambience, and looked up to see a large figure of a man on the other side of the water, slowly getting up. Although she couldn’t yet see his face, she could now sense his thoughts. His delight was unmistakable in seeing her in pain.
Ravarj: Your death will be glorious.
((Campsite))
Rivi only had fleeting dreams tonight, flashes of memories from both Amity and home. This one had been of home, back on Betazed. She was watching her son play with his cousin.
She opened her eyes abruptly, the panicked thoughts of her friend having woken her up. A second later, she heard a scream call out from further back down the ridge.
Rivi rushed up and grabbed the phaser rifle lying nearby.
((Back at the river))
Tani wasn’t a fighter by any means, and now that she was wounded, she was pathetically crawling away backward, still on the ground. She was holding her bleeding arm, the knife still lodged in the flesh as the attacker continued to come closer.
She let go of her arm to grab the type 2 phaser. She yelled out at the towering figure approaching her.
Ravarj pulled his large knife from his holster, then ducked down when he saw the sun-haired prey point a Type-2 phaser at him. He smiled. While the holographic hunts may have been addictive, at least it had prepared him for the weapon that was being fired at him - even if this prey was firing more desperately than the holographic Starfleet officers ever did. It made him feel more emboldened, to know how much his prey feared him.
Lekasa: Get away from me!
She fired wildly a few times, each shot missing, the bright orange beam briefly lighting up the dark foliage around her.
She fired a few more times before she dropped the phaser in pain, grabbing her wounded arm again.
Ravarj’s hunting instincts came to the fore. The prey was wounded, and no longer able to defend itself. He stood up like a towering giant, and held the large knife in front of him, as he slowly stepped forward, lowering his knife towards the woman as he got closer. Once within one meter of the prey, he reached forward and pointed the knife towards her head.
Just as he was about to swiftly swing his knife to cut her throat, the sensor alarm on his tetryon weapon sounded, indicating a weapons lock had been made on him. He looked up just in time to exchange a momentary glance with the other sun-haired prey.
Rivi locked eyes with the attacker, whom she now recognized as a Delta Quadrant native species known as the Hirogen. She aimed at his chest and pulled the trigger.
Ravarj dodged just before an explosion blasted the nearby tree where he’d been standing.
There was a second blast and then third, each more determined than the last, which made him roll away from his prey, and take cover behind a tree. One of the branches of the tree above him made a cracking sound, before falling on his leg as he tried to roll away. He winced in pain, and grabbed at his leg, just before he felt the sudden burn on the back of his shoulder from the blast of the phaser rifle, the armor having taken most of the damage. Wasting no time, he got to his feet and ran away from the scene as fast he could, clutching at his leg and trying to ignore the pain in his shoulder.
Rivi continued to make her way forward, firing shot after shot, as she headed towards where Tani was lying on the ground.
The Hirogen instinctively went to reach for his tetryon weapon, but realised it wasn’t on his back anymore. He then reached down to his knife holster, but was disappointed he realised that hsi blade was gone too.
More shots continued to ring out from the phaser rifle, the sound of birds and other animals screeching from the commotion as each blast hit the trees.
Apart from the few small knives he had left, he was essentially weaponless. With no other option, the Hirogen began limping his way through the dense foliage back towards his hidden scout, to treat his wounds and re-arm himself for the second phase of the hunt.
