Varati: Well, when I'm impatient, I often tap my right foot on the floor. And sometimes, rarely oO what a lie Oo, I might kick a wall panel out of slight frustration!? ::pause:: I hope the toe isn't broken? I mean, it suddenly started hurting.
Orrey calmly slid the probe over her foot, paying particular attention to the swollen toe. After a while, he nodded in agreement with what was displayed on the screen. She looked at him curiously and impatiently.
Orrey: Well, not broken…completely. Cracked it up real well though.
Calmly and serenely, the doctor placed the tricorder back on the table and then sat back down in his chair with a knowing expression as he announced the diagnosis:
Phew! Not broken, what luck! But cracked, sort of half broken... Not any better?
Varati: Oh, okay… And what does that mean? Can you help me with a suitable treatment? … And yes, I can do without heels for a while. Reluctantly.
The cute sheepskin ankle boots were also very cosy – but not very fashionable. But okay, a cracked toe was more unpleasant than going without nice shoes for a few days.
Orrey: Good news is I don’t have to reduce a fracture and you don’t have to sit through it. It isn’t fun for either of us.
Fracture? Set it back together? Watch it? Yes... no?! Watching hospital dramas was one thing, being a patient yourself, having your bones put back together, was something else entirely.
Varati: Okaaay?! And... and what do we do now? It really hurts quite a bit.
It couldn't be that bad, but D’Cyra was still a little worried about her toe.
Orrey: I am going wrap the toe, and show you how to do it as well so you can repeat it each morning.
A wrapped toe? Hopefully that would ease the pain. And in the apartment as well as in the SRC, she didn't need heels... at most a small step stool for the upper shelves and cabinets.
Varati: Oh, and physiotherapy? What can you really train with a toe? Or just let it rest?
D’Cyra sadly examined her toe before looking up at Orrey, who was leaning back in his chair in typical doctor fashion.
Orrey: ::leaning back in his chair:: I want to give you an open boot but I don’t like that on duty rotation. ::drumming his fingers on the desktop:: So what I will do is give you a slightly wider, flat, standard boot. When you aren’t working you need to be resting it. Its going to take near to a month to heal it anyway.
“Wide, flat, standard boot”?! That sounded unspectacular, but anything but beautiful.
Varati: Wait… What?! Nearly a month? That's quite a long time, isn't it? And no sports during that time? So more holo-novels and holo-movies then?
That was so long... it felt like an eternity! For a single toe!
Orrey: When you have the chance, have it elevated above that six chambered heart of yours. You can ice it for 15 or so minutes at a time before taking the ice away for 30, yes?
Putting your leg up, putting ice on your toe... Weren't those things that happened to athletes? Or to grandparents who needed to put their feet up after lunch? Somehow the situation was both funny and embarrassing.
Varati: Elevating it too? I can't exactly put a deck chair in the SRC, can I? My colleagues would give me some strange looks.
Orrey: Response
She loved to laze around, but the idea of having to do it because there was no other way wasn't so great.
Varati: I mean, what am I supposed to tell Commander Kivik if ne asks? Does that still count as a workplace accident, essentially as a delayed consequence of the mission?
Orrey: Response
D’Cyra absolutely hated hobbling around with such a shapeless "thing". Here, her vanity and the learned routine of always appearing in a presentable manner kicked in again.
Varati: And what exercises should I do? Would massages help? ::thinks:: Hmm, probably not…? And the ice only for 15 minutes?
Orrey: Response
oO Vanity Fair - yes, there I am again! Oo D’Cyra had to work on herself, couldn't let things get to her so much; a cracked toe after who knows how many kicks was a warning.
Varati: ::chuckles:: I should have just broken my toe, that would have been easier?
Orrey: Response
