((Exterior Afalqi Project Complex - Meranuge IV))

Bancroft: ::softly:: Eyes up.

Tarsan: It’s not Da’al, I’d be able to sense them…

Munro: Not necessarily, the Da'al have their own inherent psionic abilities, and we don't know the extent of that. When the Artemis assisted with the asteroid strike the Da'al and the telepathic crew were all equally affected by the Da’allium. It made them go insane.

Gavrin flushed. He should have known that - but he’d neglected to delve too far into the telepathic abilities of the Da’al when he was prepping for the mission, too interested in the technical side of things to read up on the species they’d be interacting with.

Fortunately, his embarrassment was short-lived, as the phaser turret he’d just spotted started to draw a bead on them

Tarsan: Is that… a turret? Get down!

Munro: Take cover!

Bancroft: Moving!

Gavrin and Munro ended up behind a pile of crates with Bancroft behind a low wall, Gavrin resisting the urge to peek over at the turret.

Tarsan: Someone really doesn’t want us to find out what’s going on here!

Munro: We must be onto something!

Bancroft: I don’t imagine that thing is set to ‘stun!’ Gavrin – any chance you can get an angle on it?

Tarsan: I can’t get a shot, maybe I can distract it somehow?

Munro: That's a good idea. It can only fire at one target at a time.

Bancroft: Let’s make it a thoughtful distraction! Ideally one that doesn’t involve any of us getting ventilated.

Tarsan: ::checking the readings on his tricorder:: I think it’s armoured, I’m not convinced one of our phasers will be able to take it down.

Munro: Can you overload your phaser? Roy and I will draw it's fire and you make sure you take it out with your phaser, Tarsan?

Bancroft: On your mark, Commander!

It was an excellent idea, Gavrin nodding as he started pulling apart his phaser. It would leave him without a weapon, and he was sure Lt. Cole would have words about it if she could see him, but either this was going to work and take out the turret, or it’d shoot him and he wouldn’t be alive to receive a stern talking to.

Tarsan: I just need a moment…

Munro: Ready!

Gavrin was aware of the firing going on behind him, the sound of the Da’al security officers running over - and the sound of one falling. He winced, but didn’t let it distract him from rapidly rewiring his phaser, setting it up overload with a short delay.

Bancroft: ::to the Da’al:: Get her to cover and get pressure on that wound! I’m a doctor – but I can’t help her until that turret is down!

Bancroft: ::to Munro:: Taking cover!

Tarsan: Ten more seconds…

Munro: Response

Bancroft: ::to the Da’al:: Tear a strip from your uniform – apply pressure properly! Hands alone won’t cut it! Elevate her legs – she’s at risk of going into shock! ::to Tarsan:: Gavrin, this would be an excellent moment to justify that engineering degree – we’re on a clock!

Tarsan: ::triumphantly::  It’s ready it’s ready, I just need a break in the firing!

Munro: Response

The turret fell silent, and Gavrin started to peer out from behind the crate when he realised that the turret was about to fire directly at him and Munro. He pulled back, counting the seconds down, the phaser’s capacitors letting out a high-pitched whine as they charged beyond their operating parameters.

Bancroft: My turn again, Commander!

The sound of Bancroft firing at the turret, and the noise of it turning to reacquire him was almost drowned out by the whine of the overloading phaser in his hands. It was starting to get hot.

Tarsan: ::loudly:: Fire in the hole! Take cover!

Munro/Bancroft: Response

Gavrin popped his head out from around the crates and tossed the phaser towards the turret before retreating back behind the crate and covering his ears.

It was fortunate that he’d thrown it at that exact moment, because the phaser had barely reached the turret before it exploded in a flash of light, a screech, and a wave of energy.

Gavrin’s engineering degree was indeed put to good use, but throwing was an elective course. The The throw was off-center, so instead of destroying the entire turret, two of the legs were vaporised and it teetered for a moment before falling to the ground with a sad whine.

The turret itself was still active, though unable to acquire any of the targets.

Gavrin chanced a look out.

Tarsan: Turret down! But it’s still live, be careful!

Munro/Bancroft: Response

Seeing that it was probably unlikely to be able to shoot him, Gavrin scuttled out from behind his cover, rushing over to the turret, careful to keep it pointed away from him.

It took the Betazoid a few moments to find the right panels, and he eventually resorted to kicking it a few times before he was able to fully deactivate it.

Tarsan: It’s offline, we’re good! I’m uh.. Sixty percent sure that there’s no booby traps.

Munro/Bancroft: Response

Gavrin scanned the turret with his tricorder thoroughly, checking it and the surrounds for anything that might be set to go off.

Tarsan: Ninety-five percent sure. How’s that security officer doing, Doctor?

Munro/Bancroft: Response
