Alex and Ollie split from the others. He suggested a place to start, and Alex picked her way through the clutter, careful not to disturb the piles.

Storm: Do you have any experience hacking computers?

Bergmen: I would rather plead the Seventh Guarantee on that one. You?

Storm: Well, I wouldn’t say it’s a tool in my belt. It’s more like a star in my sky. I can sure admire it, but it’s kinda out of my reach.

Bergmen: You know how to motivate people, Lieutenant.

At least she got a laugh out of the Gideon.  Once they reached the table, the two of them worked to move the clutter from the workspace in the hopes of uncovering…

Ollie lifted another pile.

There it was.

… An in-table keyboard and monitor.

Bergmen: So let’s see what this baby hides…

The screen came to life, and computer code quickly scrolled across it as the system activated... until it suddenly stopped and stayed that way.

Bergmen: Ok, that can be a problem…

He opened his tricorder, set it on the table, and began pressing buttons in search of a solution.  But Alex stood back and stared at the space.  Slowly, her arms crossed over her chest.  Her head tipped to the side, and she looked from the - still cluttered space - to the ground and back. Ollie paused, and Alex registered it, but not the words he had used.  Subconsciously, she filled the silence with a sound.

Storm: Huh…

Crouching down, she looked through the PADDs and other articles they had moved to the ground.

Bergmen: Looks like the kernel core is still on the drive, so it’s not a brick. But everything else is… gone. Deleted.

Something in his tone, drew her out of her thoughts.

Storm: I’m sorry.

Alex replayed Ollie’s last statement.

Storm:  Oh, can it be restored?

Ollie shrugged.

Bergmen: Probably, we can try. There is always some possibility to restore data after it has been deleted. But none is 100 percent successful, so until we try, we will not know.

Storm: Just a sec, Ollie.

She lowered herself further onto one knee.

Storm:  The computer hasn’t been used for quite a while.

Bergmen:  Response

Storm:  All of this was piled around it, and it doesn’t look like it was placed there with any kind of care.  I think we’re looking at this the wrong way.

Bergmen: Response

Storm:  What was on top?  The seat didn’t have anything in it, so someone had been sitting here, but they weren’t using the computer.

The four or five piles they had removed from the table were mostly still intact and now sitting on the floor around them.

Storm:  We should be looking for a data device on top of a pile…

Glancing around.  She found a PADD-like device under just one thing.  The device was smudged with fingerprints—like someone had been eating while they worked. The napkin-like article sitting on top of the pile may have been included with their meal.

Storm:  Like this one.

She picked it up.

Storm:  Ewww.  It’s sticky.

She scrunched up her nose.  Laying the device down again, she pulled out her own tricorder, scanned it for fingerprints and DNA, then tapped several other keys, swiping the screen up to save the data.

Storm:  I’ve logged the DNA. If we can access the Da’al records, we'll have something to compare it to.  I also found two sets of fingerprints - other than mine, obviously.  I can try to pull some off of other items and see if they match other items lying around.

Alex picked the device up with the napkin this time and handed it over to Ollie.

Storm:  See what you can pull from this instead.

Bergmen: Response
