(( The Office Building, Afalqi Project Launch Complex, Meranuge IV ))
Data devices were a dime a dozen, but the right one could be a gold mine. And Alex had already found a couple of nuggets.
Storm: I’ve logged the DNA. If we can access the Da’al records, we'll have something to compare it to. I also found two sets of fingerprints - other than mine, obviously. I can try to pull some off of other items and see if they match.
Using the napkin that she found draped over the device, she handed it over to Bergmen.
Storm: See what you can pull from this instead.
She waved it in front of his face, but with the look in Ollie’s eyes, Alex had only one thought.
Kid - meet candy store!
Bergmen: It's password protected. We'll have to take the longer and worse route. ::smiles to Storm:: Piece of cake. How's your thing going, ma'am?
One by one, Alex started scanning various items for fresh or even latent fingerprints. One set came up over and over, and it matched the first set she had found on the data device.
Storm: I think I isolated Havun’s prints. I’m not finding the second set of prints on anything else yet. When the Commander is done talking with Ta’Mora, I’ll ask her to find out if we can get even limited access to the Da’al database for both fingerprints and DNA.
Bergmen gave her a thumbs-up and returned to his work as Alex picked up her next item. Her lips curled into a grin.
There was an old song that reminded Alex of her search.
She picked up an object. oO Take one down. Oo
Then, she scanned it. oO Pass it around. Oo
oO Ninety-nine (hundred) items to scan. Oo
She rolled her eyes at herself, thankful that there weren’t any other telepaths in close range.
Between the song floating through her head and Ollie’s hmm or ehmm or mhhh, the room felt as cluttered with noise as it was with junk.
But Ollie’s enthusiasm broke through.
Bergmen: Ma’am? I have it. I’m in.
By then, Alex had worked her way to the other side of the desk, scanning as she went. Her head tipped up. Partially pulling one of the items out of the stack - to mark her place, Alex made her way around to Ollie’s side.
Storm: Whatcha got, Lieutenant?
He had apparently been able to slave the keyboard to the device.
Bergmen: Yeah, we were just lucky. Access to data was encrypted, not the data themself. Remove the login from the equation, and the rest is obvious. ::pressing keys on the keyboard:: Looks like… (beat) Looks like we have some technical drawings here. Plus text files, notes, probably? And… (beat) Yeah, a messenger client too.
Storm: Messenger client?
Her eyebrows shot up.
She stifled a laugh her own reaction.
Yeah...
Kid - Meet candy store.
Storm: Let’s open that up first.
Bergmen: Response
Alex positioned herself so she could read the client as Ollie opened it up. There were several sets of messages. Havun and Jetipar. Havun and someone named Fli'nte. But several down from that, it said Havun and User 5871.
Storm: That one ::gesturing to Havun and User 5871:: Looks intriguing. Let’s open that one up.
Alex set one hand on the edge of the table and leaned in, hovering just behind Ollie’s shoulder.
Bergmen: Response
For a moment, her eyes lost their sparkle as all she saw was an alpha-numeric series of letters and numbers. But one of her eyebrows raised to match the side of her mouth that quirked up.
Storm: Is that a code? Or maybe a cipher?
Bergmen: Response
