MacKenzie: Tell me more about that - it was obviously quite a challenge for you, so how did you work to overcome it?
Well, that wasn't the followup Gavrin was entirely expecting, but perhaps that was the prerogative of the Captain - to ask the awkward question and put people on the spot.
Tarsan: Not particularly well, Captain. I ended up with machines more than people? Easier to work with something that doesn't talk back.
MacKenzie: How did that feel? Is that something you still think about often?
Gavrin had just revealed more of himself to the Captain than perhaps he had intended to on their first meeting, shifting from one foot to the other at the realisation.

This was... strangely comforting for Gavrin. To be asked how he felt about something, rather than having someone read it right off him and tell him how he felt.

From man of a few words to a verbal waterfall. Well, Gavrin was making an attempt at least.

This was easier for Gavrin to work with - these questions weren't all that far from some of the conversations he'd had when applying for the Academy
Tarsan: I wanted to find out who I was, to be honest, Captain. Never really felt like a full Betazoid, even though I am. But I don't think I'd ever have been happy there. So Starfleet seemed like a good way of... being part of something bigger. And learning who I can be along the way.
