Well, I did it. I bought the penguin water carbonator at Williams
Sonoma. This means I can fill a bottle of water from my tap, press the
penguin's beak a few times to inject bubbles into the bottle of water
and serve freshly charged soda to my friends and family.

Not only that, I have roses blooming on my bushes, so on the way into
the house with my new purchase, I collected some rose petals to make a
rose petal syrup. I used sugar to make my syrup, but you could easily
steep the petals in local water, then stir in some local honey and
cook it down a little or just use it as is to sweeten and flavor your
soda water.

This is elegant over ice in a champagne glass garnished with a sprig
of mint.

Last night (on our way back from a locavore dinner at Full of Life
Flatbread) we stopped at the blueberry farm to pick fresh local
blueberries. Unfortunately the season is over and yesterday was their
final picking day until May, but we brought back enough to make a
blueberry syrup for our sodas. Maybe I'll try some San Marcos Farms
honey for this one. Hmm, wildflower or Ojai orange blossom? Hard
choice.

Thanks for the inspiration Nancy! I was going to wait until Christmas but since my partner is such a carbonated water freak, I guess I will need to break down and buy a penguin before OCTOBER Eat Local Challenge!

LOVE the ideas for rose water and blueberry infusion. So sad the blueberry season is over - now I am in a panic to find some to put in my freezer! I will check around with Whitney Farms and others. I planted 6 blueberry bushes in my yard last spring but have to wait three years to harvest. :(

Hi Shelly,
I have to admit it didn't take me too long to hit upon this reason to
buy the penguin.

I didn't realize it takes so long for the blueberries to bear. After
yesterday I want to plant some too.

They will bear sooner but based on the information I've read, you should strip the flowers and avoid harvesting fruit for the first 3 years to maximize their fruit over the lifetime of the plant. They bear fruit for 20+ years so it will be great if I can be patient!

The syrup flavor of the day was chocolate mint. A 7-year-old friend
came over today. We usually make rose petal syrup together but today
we decided to try chocolate mint. We microwave-steeped the fresh
chocolate mint leaves in water until the water began to turn yellow.
Then we strained out the leaves and stirred in sugar until it
dissolved. The sugar was somewhere between 1/12 to 2 times the volume
of the liquid.

We poured the syrup over ice and added our freshly made sparkling
water. We're thinking this would also taste really good on vanilla ice
cream, with--dare I say--blueberries.

We savored our fizzy mint drinks over a game of Scrabble. She won.

I'm thinking you could advertise and sell this flavored sparkling water - BYOB!

I'm planning a locavore potluck and showing of the movie Fresh at my
home. We'll be serving sparkling filtered tap water with optional
homemade syrups to add. I'm also planning a local honey tasting for
dessert. I'll see if I can schedule it close to the end of Sept so I can
encourage the Eat Local challenge.

Hi Nancy,
Just curious, why did you decide to go with a Penguin vs. the Pure? Do the glass carafes come with caps to keep the carbonation in?

Hi Shelly,
The Penguin is the only sparkling water maker that I know of that has
a glass carafe. The Pure has plastic and although it works pretty much
the same, I like the idea of using glass. And, yes, it has a very
clever cap that really keeps the carbonation in. I thought the cap was
odd at first because you slide it on then screw it down, but now I
realize what a great design it is for keeping it sparkling, even after
days in the refrigerator.

To be honest I didn't do a lot of research beyond going to Krista's
house and tasting the results. I decided I liked the glass better than
plastic. And I did compare the models on the web.

Krista is right the caps are great at keeping the carbonation in the
bottle although the soda doesn't stay in the bottle long at our house.
