Hi- Thanks for the resources...very helpful.
There's also Claravale- raw milk and cream in glass bottles. (
http://claravaledairy.com/index.html) Kinda far - Panoche is about 260 miles. Can get it at Lazy Acres and Cantwells in Summerland. I personally like it better than organic pastures.
There's a controversy right now about Organic Valley- they've started ultrapastuerizing all their milk, which basically leaves it sterile. And they also told their farmer's they couldn't sell raw to anyone. They've modified that a little to say they could only sell to friends and neighbors and then only a very limited amount. Strikes me as trying to monopolize....
UCSB is having a symposium Oct 5 on local food- I've copied the info below.
Thanks again,
Vicki
Sustainability: More greenwash or the key to our
future?
The example of localizing the Santa Barbara
County food system
Presentation by the 2009-2010 UCSB Campus Sustainability
Champion
Professor David Cleveland
October 5th, 2010,
3:00-5:30pm
FREE
Corwin Pavilion, UCSB
Dr. Cleveland's team of UCSB undergraduates spent the last year doing
research to answer this question. The team found that while Santa
Barbara County produces an abundance of fruit and vegetables, we
import most of the produce we eat, which contributes to food
insecurity and global warming. The team also found that many people
are working to localize the system as a way to make it more
sustainable, often successfully overcoming skepticism and
institutional obstacles. But what effect will this localization have?
How can the concept of sustainability be put to work for localization?
We hope that you will be able to attend the presentation, to hear from
Dr. Cleveland, and to participate in a discussion on these very
questions.
There will also be an edible demonstration of our
food system featuring fresh fruits and vegetables provided by local
farmers, UCSBs Ucen Dining and Residential Dining Service, Farmer
Direct Produce and the Isla Vista Food Cooperative.
