Yes! You need to confirm that the expiration date of your passport is valid for 6 months after the end of your study abroad program. Please contact your Program Manager to get an estimated last day for the program, if the program dates are not available already. If your passport will expire during the time you are abroad or within the 6 months following your program, you will need to renew your passport.

The application fee is $130, and if you are applying for a passport for the first time, you will need to pay an additional $35 acceptance fee. You can review the fees here, and there is a fee calculator on their website.

Processing time can take up to 18 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received. The 18-week time frame includes up to 12 weeks for processing and up to 6 weeks for mailing times on the front and back end.

All Padua Conflict Journalism students will live in the Don Mazza Residences in downtown Padua. The Don Mazza Residence is divided between co-ed, all-female, or all-male buildings/floors. These facilities are modern and well-equipped for a comfortable and immersive semester of living and learning in Padua. Students will receive partial board (5 dinners per week, Monday through Friday) and have access to a nearby dining hall. There is a communal kitchen in the facilities which students can use for breakfast preparation. Students will be placed in a double room with another student from the BU Padua Conflict Journalism program. Rooms are on the same floor as local students for an immersive experience. All rooms have an ensuite bathroom, and dorm facilities have wifi, common areas with air conditioning, conference room, library, computer lab, classrooms, reading room and TV room, coffee rooms, coin-operated laundry and ironing room, gym, piano, garden, bicycle parking. No linens are provided, so students can either bring them (standard twin size) or purchase them upon arrival in Padua.

If you are intending to apply for a Medical Single bedroom in Padua or any other specific housing considerations due to a medical need, then you are suggested to ensure that you have started the Disability & Access Services (DAS) application in Boston a minimum of three weeks prior to the deadline for registering housing preferences. Padua MUST receive approval from the DAS office in Boston to allocate you a medical single.

U.S. citizens do NOT require a student visa for the summer program. U.S. passport holders may enter Italy for short-term study for academic credit (such as this program) without a visa. However, please note that you will not be able to stay in the Schengen zone (most of continental Europe) for more than 90 days total within a 180-day period, this includes the time during which you are studying in Padua. Note, your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the program end date.

E.U. citizens traveling with a valid passport do NOT need a visa for the summer program and are not restricted on the length of stay. EU dual citizens or permanent residents with a valid European passport or ID should plan to travel exclusively with their EU documents instead of their US/home country passport.

Please note that the Schengen Territory requires that your US visa/green card/etc. be valid until 90 days after your study abroad program ends. If your visa will expire before that date, please contact your ISSO office and your Program Manager, Liz McBean immediately.

When your appointment is scheduled, let your Program Manager know (1) the date and (2) the consultate where you will be applying, as they will supply with you with consulate-specific letters necessary for your visa application. Please make sure to give advance notice (at a minimum 1-2 weeks before your appointment).

You must attend your appointment in person and present all required materials for the application. Incomplete applications will be rejected and you will have to reschedule. Each consulate requires slightly different documents, so you will need to check the requirements for the consulate under whose jurisdiction you belong.

Note: You will not have access to your passport while the visa is being processed. Please account for any planned international travel between your visa application and your program start in Padua. Your passport may be held as long as 6 weeks, and you cannot expedite its return.

After you submit your application materials, you should receive your passport and visa back (so long as your application is approved) within 2-6 weeks. The visa will appear as a sticker inside one of the back pages of your passport. You need to double check that your name is spelled correctly on the visa, and that the visa is issued for the correct duration of the program.

You will also receive your Italian visa letter back. It will be signed and stamped. You will need this the first week in Italy when you complete a Declaration of Presence, so please make sure to scan your visa and this attestato letter and email them to your Program Manager.

Students should book a flight directly into Italy without a layover in other European countries part of the Schengen Zone (which consists of most of continental Europe). This is necessary in order to ease the onsite immigration process once in Italy. By flying directly into Europe through Italy, your passport will be stamped at the border, and this stamp will work in lieu of a declaration of presence. The declaration of presence is a process that would need to be completed onsite with the aid of the Italy site staff and will take time and carry an additional cost. Layovers in Rome, Milan, or other Italian cities are fine.

Each term, we offer students the option to book through our travel agency, Advantage Travel. Some semesters we are able to offer an option recommended group flight, round-trip from the East coast to Venice. The cost of the recommended flight is NOT included in the program fee. Students are not required to take the recommended flight; however, all students are required to submit a round-trip itinerary for our records. Please note that some semesters, we are unable to book seats on a group flight. we will still offer students the option to book through Advantage Travel. Advantage Travel will coordinate flight itineraries so that program participants have the opportunity to fly with other Boston University Study Abroad students whenever practical.

Although airfare is not included in the cost of the program, all travel booked through Advantage Travel will be monitored by the travel agency on the day of departure, and they will be able to assist with any schedule changes, delays, or missed connections. The flight also allows you to travel with other students from the program.

If you will be traveling from elsewhere prior to the group flight, Advantage Travel can also assist you with reserving a flight to the departure city. They can also book you on an independent flight if the city suggested is not your home city.

While BU Study Abroad provides all students with comprehensive international health insurance through GeoBlue, travel insurance for your flights is different. You can elect to purchase travel insurance directly through Advantage Travel when booking with them for an additional fee.

What if I want to arrange my own travel? You can! We recommend that you make your flight reservation with Advantage Travel to be provided with better opportunities to modify flights and minimize expenses related to changes.

However, if you prefer to travel independently from the group or book your own travel, you are welcome to do so. Note: Advantage Travel can assist you with reservations from a different airport or on different dates, or you can make a reservation completely on your own.

We encourage you to hold off on booking flights until we send out detailed flight information for your program in the spring. There will be a required arrival time on the program start date, and you must depart on the last day of the program. Housing will not be provided before or after these dates. Late arrivals and early departures are not permitted. once you have confirmed your independent travel, you must submit the independent flight form by May 1, 2024.

All students that choose to book an independent flight are required to submit travel plans to BU Study Abroad. Once you have confirmed your independent travel, you must submit the independent flight form.

BU International Travel Registry: All study abroad students will be registered for the BU International Travel Registry. This tool provides information on your program site and sends travel alerts for your location throughout the semester. You will each receive a pre-departure email with more information.

A required pre-departure meeting for all students will take place in-person on Saturday, April 6th. Participation details, including the schedule and location, will be emailed by your Program Manager. This orientation will include important information to prepare you for your semester abroad and will also give you time and space to meet the other students studying in your program. Students who are not in the Boston area will be able to join via Zoom. A Zoom link will be shared via email prior to the pre-departure meeting to those who do not attend BU.

All students are required to participate. This meeting is intended to give you an overview of daily life, culture, health and safety, and academics on your program. You will also have the opportunity to ask your Program Manager any questions about what to expect as you prepare for your time abroad.
