Started my computer today and Malwarebytes was gone. It may have been gone for days. The program obviously uninstalled itself. Didn't show up in my applications list at all. The only malwarebytes file left on the computer was a .dll file with the name changed to .old. The last thing I remember was a while ago and malwarebytes asked to upgrade to the newest version. I have a paid subscription. This is all over the normal forums on the internet, how come there is nothing about it here where it should be. I got it working again by downloading and installing the newest version as suggested on another forum.. It automatically picked up my subscription information when it installed.

This is something that should never happen with a security product. It makes me kind of question if the program even works. And makes me question the integrity of the company since there is no mention of this obviously serious problem on the malwarebytes website. Search for malwarebytes is missing and you will find pages of hits.

This happened to me today. I booted my PC and MB alerted me that a new version was ready to be installed. So, I clicked the install button and went to the prompts. Once install was complete, MB told me to reboot the PC for changes to take effect. The PC rebooted and now there is no MB on my PC.

EDIT: After reinstalling MB from the official MB site it appears to have retained all of my settings, history and account info. I'm not going crazy because MB was not on my PC after the update. There was no process running, no service running. I should have looked in the original install location to see if there were files there. Which must have been since it retained my info after reinstalling.

Malwarebytes has uninstalled itself from my PC (Windows 10) twice within the past few days. When I tried to re-install it after the second deletion (just now), it reached the stage of asking me to restart the PC but, when I did so, it didn't re-install.

The last time MB prompted me to update was from v3.0.5 to v3.0.6. I had to do a manual update to get v3.1. MB never notified of new release to v3.1 and I only learned of that version by reading these forums. I had to manually update from v.3.1 to v.3.2 as well.

Thank you for sending the reports file. It seems that on the Upgrade run November 2nd ( near 6:21 pm your time) there was ( or should have been) a prompt to Restart the system. But it was declined. That is regrettable.

When in Windows Explorer, press ALT-key then V key to get VIEW menu
Look at the top ribbon, right side. the Show/Hide block
Look at the line "Hidden items". IF it has no checkmark, then Click the box one time so that it is checked.

If you are having issues with certain software, a new thread is permissible.
Some threads already exist specifically for certain packages, at this stage Microsoft Security Essentials and Kaspersky Products, and if your query relates to one of these it would be best served in one of those threads.

Please use the Virus Removal Help thread if you need assistance in removing a virus. That thread also contains basic virus removal instructions. The link for the thread is in the note at the top of this page.

An amusing comment about it on the Internet: Nevertheless, it would be better to install F-Prot Antivirus than to try to survive on the security that comes native with Windows. One license will protect five home computers, which is a very nice aspect of this antivirus software product.

They have their own engine and were a damn good AV, dumped them for AVP (Kaspersky) when that came out.
Haven't seen it or heard much about them in recent times, might download a copy and have a look, it used to run lean and mean but as I said that was all a long time ago.

At the time you mention, I remember using McAfee to remove a virus that "tech support" could not. Wow, that was in the late '80s or maybe 1990. McAfee was the only one that could remove it back then. Don't remember F-prot, but then again I was supposed to be concentrating on VMS, not MS-DOS.

That's not good, is it. Having said that, I'm sure we could find 10 samples for each engine out there to obtain similar results. It's whether they get caught before they do the intended damage is the real question.

All the ransomware/file-encryption programs can be very financially nasty, particularly if you don't have have up-to-date backups. But these are malware rather than virii. The later are design to replicate and flourish by passing from one system to the other.

If you have a decent ISS, configured correctly, regularly updated and scanning and use the Internet via a limited account, with care and suspicion, even view mail with links and/or attachments with suspicion (- contact your financial institution if not sure), it's likely that you'll be reasonably safe.

I scan my desktop PC after every extended internet session and then let Norton's turn my PC off if all is OK. I feel that action has kept my desktop PC working in top condition. Once a week usually on the weekend I do a full Malwarebytes Scan as well.

I share your pain buddy, I'm sticking with windows 7 until support runs dry in 2020. I see no reason to upgrade to windows 10 until then, I love the fact I can control updates with windows 7 on my cable connection.

I get why people are upgrading to windows 10 but judging from all the frustration I see from many people having painful experiences with the updates screwing things up, I want to stay with windows 7 until windows 10 has fully matured into the OS it should be.

Sorry Waz I did not concentrate for a minute. Will post in where I thought I was now.
I guess I got sucked in. Edit coming up ( funny thing is I was trying to find my post in Windows 10 thread, where I thought we were discussing that posters comment. Sorry again :-(

Their is KIS & TIS as above, both 2015 (which were are copyrighted 2014).f As stated above should I wait or get the 2016 version, or get this year's version & just get the updates at a cheaper price & 'discounted' price?

Depending on your protection requirements, you might want to enable scanning browser add-ons/extensions and go through a "tuning" exercise to exclude the extensions that are valid. All others will be deleted. Naturally, this means that you know what you're doing. The advantage of doing that is that rogue extensions that arrive will be deleted on the next scan (free version).

Good advise. I do not believe that Kaspersky is a bad product. I use a different one myself but the problem that poster highlights is more than likely a corrupted install and I would firstly re-install it, be4 doing anything else.

I've decided to disable the Windows 10 firewall, and run Comodo for a few weeks.
Not that I've had an issue with the Windows 10 firewall; I'm running Comodo more to satisfy my curiosity and see if there are any features lacking compared to the Windows firewall.

I've just had an interesting 24 hours. What started out as an attempt to fix google.com re-directing to cse.google.com ended up with me resetting the pc, (ie. the windows reset that leaves your files but wipes all your apps and settings), followed by BSOD Memory Management errors... with failed memory diagnostic checks.

I was disappointed that neither Kaspersky or Malwarebytes could solve the google custom search engine problem. (those are the only two I tried before I got into a further pickle and buggered windows) I would have thought that was a fairly easy thing to fix.

What I mean by this is that although its been a frustrating time.. I haven't lost anything. My important files are on google drive anyway, my games are all Steam games etc... So its just a matter of starting from scratch, and downloading everything again..

Last point..the PC is used for torrents and usenet etc... so its asking for it (no real need to go off topic and clip me round the ear ;-) I wonder which products can actually cope with that kind of use..or will they all spit the dummy every time they scan the pc?

A lot of programs, now give you the choice to install toolbars & other during the install. Either uncheck these items during install, or use Custom install. No more click, click during an install, you have to read after each click.

Or, Use Unchecky to help prevent these third party installs. Nothing is perfect, the badies are always ahead of the goodies, so be vigilant.

A reliable application that aims to protect your computer against third-party components, often offered during software installations.

I use Softpedia & FreewareFiles.com, they make you aware what Ad-supported programs the author of the program has included.

First and foremost, extra attention needs to be paid during installation as ImgBurn offers to create desktop shortcuts to third-party apps, as well as install a browser toolbar onto the host computer, which are not required to ensure the smooth running of the app.
SS of above.

This is what ImgBurn tries to install.

Heard some negative reports from a while back (and older threads here) about kaspersky, avg isnt reknown for 'keeping up', and varying reports on bitdefender etc. Very few mentions of bullguard or vipre (except for dated reviews/tests).

Start by eliminating Viper, AVG, Bullguard. These are second-rate products, not worth considering IMO. Where did you read that they are good? Kaspersky, Bitdefender (and possibly Norton) are worth getting.

I had never heard of it untill recently but was having trouble, a web page I was in said to download the trial and run it. It found things the others had missed and cleared up my problems( I don't use it though).

I have seen this as well and it was related to having another AV (think it was once on one of mine) and was not able to turn WD while the other was running.
Just checked mine now and it states "windows defender and avast both report they are turned on".
