Good day, All!

A fully-funded PhD position will be available from January 2026 to investigate the ecological impacts of climate change on the vegetation of the Maloti-Drakensberg’s montane grasslands and the associated ecosystem services. The project will be under the supervision of Prof Peter le Roux at the University of Pretoria (Department of Plant and Soil Sciences), and will form part of a larger international project conducted in close collaboration with the Afromontane Research Unit at the University of the Free State, the University of Venda, and the University of Bergen (Norway).

To Apply:

Please submit a cover letter detailing your motivation and suitability for this project, a CV, academic transcripts, an example of recent scientific writing, and contact information for two academic referees to Prof Peter le Roux (peter....@up.ac.za).

Application will be evaluated until a suitable candidate is found. The first round of submissions will be evaluated on 20 October 2025, but applications thereafter will still be welcomed if a suitable candidate has not yet been identified. All applications are welcome, but, per the funder’s requirements, preference will be given to South African applicants.

Anticipated Start Date: January 2026
