Leadership for Conservation in Africa

Hello ,

This week, Unlocking Nature will launch an insightful 5-part series of events tracing the story of Africa’s lions. Bringing together leading African lion researchers and conservationists, we will explore what population data and genetics reveal about their status across the continent, their social ecology, why lions matter, and how landscapes and human pressures shape their survival.

On Thursday, 9 April, Episode 1 will kick off the series by revealing how lion populations vary across their range. Guest speakers Dr Laura Bertola from the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bangalore and Dr Samantha Nicholson from the IUCN Cat Specialist Group will examine how to delineate local, regional, and continental populations to describe their status and trends. The discussion will also address how genetic data can be used to inform policy and management. Together, these perspectives will provide insight into the challenges and opportunities for effective lion conservation across various geographic scales.

You can join this event by following the registration link and learn more about the rest of the series below.
