Dear Colleagues and Collaborators,

Please save the date for this month’s exciting seminar at the Cape Research Centre (CRC) in Tokai!

Speaker: Dr. Lorène Jeantet, African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS)

Title: AI for Ecology: How It Can Help Monitor Wildlife

Date & Time: Thursday, 16 October 2025 | 12h00–13h00

Venue: Cape Research Centre Hall and Teams (online) - invitation and meeting link to follow soon

About the talk:

Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate, making wildlife monitoring more critical than ever to guide effective conservation measures. Advances in technology, such as the miniaturization of sensors and expanded storage capacity of recorders, now allow the long-term collection of high-resolution data from species that are otherwise difficult to study in the wild. However, these large and complex datasets present major analytical challenges. Automating data processing has therefore become essential in ecology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers powerful tools to meet this need. In this talk, Dr. Lorène Jeantet will highlight recent advances where AI has been applied to long-term monitoring data—acoustic, video, and time series—to improve our understanding of endangered species and support their conservation.

About the speaker:

Dr. Lorène Jeantet is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) at Muizenberg and is affiliated with Stellenbosch University, South Africa. She completed her PhD at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in behavioural ecology of sea turtles, where she developed a model to automatically identify underwater behaviours of sea turtles using bio-logger data. At AIMS, her research focuses on developing innovative and efficient AI models to analyse long-term monitoring data (acoustic, video, time series, etc.) from endangered species, with the aim of advancing ecological knowledge and contributing to their conservation

If you no longer wish to receive emails about our seminar series or know anyone who would like to be added to our distribution list, please let us know. Alternatively, if you would like to present a seminar or suggest a topic for future sessions, we would be happy to hear from you.

Lastly, please feel free to share this event with colleagues/students who may be interested.

Best wishes,
