Dear SAWMA community,
See the information below about Leadership for Conservation in Africa(LCA) events coming up, and featuring some SAWMA members:
Series on Lion Conservation in Africa:
“We closed out April with two highly successful events focused on lion conservation in Africa, and we are very excited for what May has in store for you. We’re pleased to share that our Lion Conservation Series will continue throughout May, and that we will also be reigniting the LCA Spark Talks live studio events this month.
On 7 May, we’ll be live with Mouhamadou Ndiaye, Dr. Stéphanie Periquet-Pearce and Ablaye Diop, who will discuss lion conservation in West Africa. They will provide an overview of the West African lion, including its distribution, genetics and key differences from southern African lions. The talk will then focus on the population in Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal, and the broader ecosystem they inhabit.
On 21 May, we will explore the socio-ecology behind lion declines with Prof. Andrew Loveridge. Drawing on 25 years of research and conservation action, he will explore how the African lion’s successful and unique adaptation as an apex predator in African savannahs exposes it to severe population decline and extirpation in the 21st century, and what we can do about it.
Away from the fascinating realm of lions, we’re also diving into the world of marine science with Spark Talks - a live studio event broadcast from Homebrew Wild’s stage in Cape Town. Taking place in front of a studio audience on 11 May, and also streamed live through our channels, this presentation by Prof. George Branch and Margo Branch will be a mix of talks and interactive workshops that involve the audience and challenge you to come up with solutions to some of the pressing issues we face.

Event 1 and 2 in this series is now available online. Learn how lion populations vary across their range, how genetic data can be used to inform policy and management and gain insight into the challenges and opportunities for effective conservation of the lion across various geographic scales with our first episode. Episode Two explores managing lions as a single, connected meta-population across their range and how one species can help us rethink conservation itself

Also join the LCA Spark Talks:
George and Margo Branch wrote the award-winning books Living Shores of southern Africa, and Two Oceans – a Field Guide to the Marine Life of Southern Africa. During our LCA Spark Talks live broadcast from Atlantic Studios in Cape Town, the Branches will run three sessions that deal with:
• How fisheries are managed in South Africa
• Careers that involve marine science
• The implementation of marine protected areas in South Africa
The event will take place in front of a live studio audience, but you can join from anywhere in the world with our live feed. Simply register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/uXvTbpOYSkikx3Yk-tsrtw#/registration
