(CRC Seminar) AI for Ecology: How It Can Help Monitor Wildlife

You’ve been invited to:

AI for Ecology: How It Can Help Monitor Wildlife

The Cape Research Centre (CRC) of SANParks hosts a seminar in Tokai (Cape Town) and online: AI for Ecology: How It Can Help Monitor Wildlife.

By Lorène Jeantet, a postdoctoral fellow in Machine Learning for Ecology, at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences.

Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate, making wildlife monitoring more critical than ever to guide effective conservation measures. Advances in technology, such as the miniaturization of sensors and expanded storage capacity of recorders, now allow the long-term collection of high-resolution data from species that are otherwise difficult to study in the wild. However, these large and complex datasets present major analytical challenges. Automating data processing has therefore become essential in ecology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers powerful tools to meet this need. In this talk, I will highlight recent advances where AI has been applied to long-term monitoring data — acoustic, video, and time series — to improve our understanding of endangered species and support their conservation.

Hi again, SAWMA community,

Also, as you know, I have been advertising seminars that SANParks are hosting on a monthly basis. If you missed any recent ones, including the last one on AI for Ecology,  all recorded seminars can be found at this link: https://www.sanparks.org/conservation/scientific-services/nodes/cape-research-centre/seminar-series
