It sounds bizarre, doesn't it?
Even as everybody and his uncle wants Ajmal Kasab sent to the gallows,
we want him set free. Even as every Indian is baying for his blood, we
are suggesting something as absurd as letting him off.
Our logic is simple: why should we spend Rs 85 lakh a day on keeping
alive someone who is a confirmed terrorist. If we can't hang him, we
shouldn't waste the tax-payers' money either.
In a country where thousands (if not millions) can't afford two square
meals, we are spending a fortune on keeping alive a cold-blooded
brute.
While we laud our legal system for giving Kasab a fair trial, dragging
the case for two full years after the 26/11 massacre is simply not
acceptable.
Our track record in dealing with terrorists is not very encouraging.
Afzal Guru, the mastermind behind the 2001 Parliament attack, is
enjoying state hospitality while his plea for presidential pardon is
collecting dust.
Once Kasab is set free, his handlers from Pakistan will finish him off
without charging us a penny. If not, there are enough in this country
who will do the job with glee.
