Let me know how you guys feel about people who are on the google group
but never show up... or work.
Should we kick 'em off the mailing list?

I would say not yet... because we only met once I guess...
We def need more people, I'm glad you hired an engineer! I also tried to convince one today, he said he knows other students who might wanna join so let's see if it's true (gave him my contact info)
Also, I 'hired' Che (3rd year, Architecture) chill...@gmail.com, I think we should add him to the list!!

Mauricio-

I agree with Niko it was only the first meeting you shouldn't kick me out for not being there.  But do as you like.

Mauricio:

Maybe you should have a broadcast to alumni to keep them in the loop. Many alumni cannot get to Cooper during the day but are still looking to collaborate with you all.

I think we need to get more people.  Do you think there is a strategic way to involve more students?  Should we post up fliers?

Hey Miguel! Hello fundraising team members!

I agree with Rocco, some of us alumni cannot make it out to the daytime meeting you guys have because of our jobs. I work in Long Island City, so even going to Cooper during my lunch hour doesn't work- it takes me an hour to get back and forth- I wont even have time to stay at the meeting! So, if you have some meetings where I can make it, especially on the weekends or nights after 5 or 6pm, I always look at my schedule. I have things to contribute- and I am preparing to present those things to everyone soon anyway, and I really want to keep hearing all these ideas and suggestions- and know I can be of help in making them happen.
I always check my email from this list, and prefer NOT to get "kicked off" :) those are strong words, by the way!

A little bit about me since I did not introduce myself to the whole group:
I graduated School of Architecture in 2006, I have known Rocco since I was a High school student, I went to school with Lea.
I was a student council rep. during my time at Cooper every year, organized alot of big events, including fundraising events too, conferences for AIAS, and during my 4th yr I was Ad Chair of the student council. I have sat on many committee meetings during those years including trustee meetings, faculty meetings, and admin meetings. I was one of the student council members that actively organized that first "walk-out" in 2005 and the creation of the "Invitation to a Voyage" document during that time. Now, I am planning to join the Alumni Council (Rocco, can you help me out there, do I need a nomination?)
That's one of the reasons I want to be involved with this, and will try my best to show up to the in-person meetings. I am still reading through all the different streams of information about ideas and topics and its taking a while to digest everything.

Regarding this Cooper fundraising issue specifically: Some of you may already know (and feel free to update anyone who is interested) but a few days ago I announced a startup project. I am working on that almost FULL TIME now, in addition to my day job! I also run a school/studio out of my apartment part time.
We are interviewing interested candidates to do specific tasks for the project we have. We are also looking for key- co founders- most importantly.
My teammates are my husband Martin Labud (his brother went to Cooper) and my sister Jamie Alexander (current architecture student). We still need a couple more key-co founders with programming and/or graphic design background. (And these two people should be willing to sign an NDA)
My two partners and I have created this startup together a year ago but it was put on hold. Not coincidentally, the whole idea of the startup is directly related to Cooper and its finances. We just didn't know this "crisis" would be in the spotlight so soon. When this happened, we took the project OFF hold and now we are aggressively working toward our first launch date. You will all hear about it, and we will need greater community help soon, so please spread the word and keep a lookout. We are in the process of preparing a presentation/first beta launch of our product/idea to the community and strategic partners who we may need to keep this running with momentum. We also want press involved, but not at this moment yet. We still need a very talented programmer/s, who is willing to sign an NDA so if you know anyone, please let me know. (Preferably an alum, because of possible institutional intellectual property issues)

Please, feel free to email me and I will try my best to respond as soon as it is possible for me. If you guys give me some "work" to do outside of the meetings- such as writing, editing, or phone calling- etc.... I will do it!  Let me know, use me as you need. See you guys soon.

Jesicka-

Since you are asking anyone who is getting involved with your 'start-up' to sign a 'non-disclosure agreement' I assume you cannot tell me much about it.  But any more information would be helpful as I do not think it would be good for anyone involving themselves in saving the school to spend time doing work that is being done by someone else or another group.  I like that there are many unique and novel solutions being written about and pursued but if we overlap we should know to combine our efforts.

I have not spent a great deal of time at the public relations department, nor at the department of development, but from the few flyers that I have picked up from these offices I am worried that the school has been projecting an image that is not helping us raise money.

Like I said previously I think it would be easy for the school to be run on philanthropy alone, but also don't think the school believes it to be possible.

I think one key element in raising money for the school is to show the public just how many of Cooper's alumni have done work that is at its core philanthropic.

At the moment I am envisioning a way to take that information and share it with philanthropic foundations and wealthy individuals to present how Cooper Union has influenced its students, alumni and faculty to give back to those around them.  It would be a call for help to keep the school alive and educating those here about their profession and their duty to each other and the world.

Do you know of a place where I can gather information like that?  Or am I wrong?  Have graduates not been influenced by Peter Cooper's history in the way I imagine?

Thanks,

Lou Lipson

Dear all,

- We should definitely include Lorenzo and Audrey to the group, they're great people. I have class with Audrey on Fridays so I'll talk to her. I'll also talk to Lorenzo whenever I see him in studio.

- Let's have as many people involved as possible, let's just not make the free lunch an argument to join please..!
Flyers sound like a great idea to advertise. Should we do it this week-end? Boards/elevators/doors in both buildings?

- I think that having a regular contact with the Alumni is essential, I wish we could find a way to meet at better times for them to join. I think that the alumni body is the natural extension of the student body - they have jobs and families, but their commitment to Cooper is probably the same as ours. They have the knowledge of what Cooper stands for outside of these walls. Who knows it, what do people know/think about it, etc --> how to reach people, make them share our cause and donate!
Also, developing the idea of a magazine or any other kind of publication that would contain current and past works cannot happen without their input, we really want it to look professional and consistent.

- Lou: I think we should give it a try. Perhaps the development office is already in touch with such institutions so we have to make sure our actions don't overlap. I also think we need our discourse ready to be convincing and concise whenever we approach them. Having an evocative video would also be a great support. Images of students sacrificing their sleep and their fun times every evening and every week-end to produce beautiful work is more striking than words to convey our commitment to Cooper.

- Jesicka: we haven't met yet but thanks a lot for being so involved and positive! I personally don't know what your startup is about. My profile doesn't correspond to those you are looking for - and Thesis is about to become time consuming/life killing - but if I knew more about the goal of the company, I feel like I could talk about it to people who might be interested in joining.

- I know Mitch want to develop the design of the booth, push the concept, etc. Anyone motivated should get in touch with him : )

- Jasmine (Art student) is collecting money (I think she can get some with the student council) to put a huge balloon with a logo on it outside of Cooper in order to communicate permanently with the public/ immediate environment I guess and give some visibility to the movement.
What do you guys think about it? Should the Fundraising Committee be involved with that?

Thanks and let's keep talking!

Nico,
Yes, we should support them any way we can. Maybe we should bring up
the idea to the President or the development office to get some funds
for them. I think their project is a great way to show the students
solidarity and commitment to Cooper. This is a great event to record
for our videos.

Dear Alumni (Rocco and Jesicka),

I want to make our meetings more available to you guys. The difficulty
is finding a balance between the students' availability (which is best
during club hours, our current meeting hours) and your availability. I
am willing to meet with you during the week, after 6, on a weekly
basis. Anyone from the committee, or alumni body is welcome to these
meetings. The nature of the meetings will be to inform you of our
current projects, dialogue with the development office, and to collect
any suggestions, work, proposals, etc... from the alumni that cannot
make it to our club hour meetings. We want your mentorship! We need
your help.

Please let it be clear that our committee's goals depend on better
communication among students, faculty, alumni, administration and
board of trustees. Let's create a structure that reflects our goals to
communicate for the purposes of finding actual solutions.

Rocco: Broadcasting this forum makes me nervous as to what I write,
thus, affecting my ability to think and express unpopular ideas. I
might be the only one though, so if everyone else agrees, I'm all for
it. One of the things I want to be aware and prepared for is the fact
that any information, solution, etc... can be retrofitted and used for
the purposes of a tuition model. This makes me afraid, and it is the
reason why I am wary of being overly open. An easy fix would be to
consolidate and censor broadcasts.... --- I might be the only one
thinking like this, so please don't take this as the definitive word.

All other members, please to these conversations. What should we do to
keep all non-committee members informed? can anyone volunteer to write
up weekly broadcasts?
