to wrvu-...@list.vanderbilt.edu, wrvu-trainees, Save WRVU!
As you all know, this has been a very difficult and busy semester.
Given the fact that this year is my senior year and I have many other
obligations demanding my time, I mainly took the General Manager
position at WRVU with the assumption that nothing quite as tumultuous
as the community DJ cap of last fall would happen again. Of course,
that assumption did not hold, and I have found myself extremely
strapped for time, which has forced me to never be able to give my
full attention to anything. Given all of these extraordinary demands,
I am not helping myself and, most importantly, I am not helping the
station. That is why, at the end of this month, I am planning on
resigning the position of General Manager of WRVU. The time has come
to allow someone else to take the reins and guide the station. My
time as General Manager has been incredibly rewarding, and I will
always look back on this as the most educational period of my life.

I have spoken to current Music Director Victor Clarke, and he has
agreed to step up and assume the role of General Manager for the rest
of the year. I have supreme confidence in his abilities and
temperament, and I know he will make an excellent leader. I highly
recommend him as my replacement, and while the VSC board makes the
final decision, I am confident that they will agree.

I do not see my resignation as a defeat for WRVU, but as a chance to
breathe new life into our cause. I spoke to Don Benson on Friday
night after his induction into the VSC Hall of Fame, and he mentioned
something that may end up (at least temporarily) saving the station.
Since he runs multiple radio stations, he has also had to look at
selling. His research shows that while radio broadcast values are at
an all-time low, they will not continue to decrease but will increase
as the economy does better. As we have all been saying since this was
announced, there is still significant value in radio (he mentioned the
90-95% of people who still listen to the radio). In fact, even if
radio ends up completely dying off in the next few years, the spectrum
will still be worth quite a bit, due to the fact that there is limited
space in the air to transmit radio, phone, and wireless internet
signals, in addition to whatever new technologies come up. So, to
sell now would be a mistake, since VSC would be selling at the bottom
of the market.

Given that VSC has used the continually declining value of radio as a
major platform to support their decision, I believe that this insight
will significantly bolster our chances of saving the station. Even if
it only punts the decision down the road for a few years, we will then
have a presence on the board, much better WRVU alumni relations, and
even stronger community support. We will not be blindsided and
scrambling to save the station, but can use the time to formulate
alternatives.

I thank every single one of you for your support and dedication
throughout this tough time. We are a incredible community here at
WRVU, and I do not want to see that change. The station deserves
someone who can put more time into it than I have been able to, and I
know that Victor will be able to lead the station well. Thank you for
all that you have taught me,

Mikil Taylor

Hello Mikil.

Sorry to hear you will be stepping down -- I hope this does not mean you will withdraw from continuing to advocate on the station's behalf, or helping your successors to negotiate the relationship with VSC.

On another note, I wanted to check and see whether the KLSU promo had made it on the air - not only in DJ HAL autorotation, but also for the DJ's to play.  I listened to the station a bit over the last several days and didn't hear it, but of course that doesn't mean it wasn't being played.

Best,

Justin

I will absolutely continue to be involved in WRVU, and making sure
that we can stay on the airwaves in Nashville. WRVU is too much a
part of my life for me to just completely drop it. I will be taking a
lesser role, but I'll still be here helping out.

I just put the KLSU promo into autorotation, but I don't have a CD
that I can burn it onto with me right now. I'll try to get it done
pretty soon.
