I have spoken to current Music Director Victor Clarke, and he has
agreed to step up and assume the role of General Manager for the rest
of the year. I have supreme confidence in his abilities and
temperament, and I know he will make an excellent leader. I highly
recommend him as my replacement, and while the VSC board makes the
final decision, I am confident that they will agree.
I do not see my resignation as a defeat for WRVU, but as a chance to
breathe new life into our cause. I spoke to Don Benson on Friday
night after his induction into the VSC Hall of Fame, and he mentioned
something that may end up (at least temporarily) saving the station.
Since he runs multiple radio stations, he has also had to look at
selling. His research shows that while radio broadcast values are at
an all-time low, they will not continue to decrease but will increase
as the economy does better. As we have all been saying since this was
announced, there is still significant value in radio (he mentioned the
90-95% of people who still listen to the radio). In fact, even if
radio ends up completely dying off in the next few years, the spectrum
will still be worth quite a bit, due to the fact that there is limited
space in the air to transmit radio, phone, and wireless internet
signals, in addition to whatever new technologies come up. So, to
sell now would be a mistake, since VSC would be selling at the bottom
of the market.
Given that VSC has used the continually declining value of radio as a
major platform to support their decision, I believe that this insight
will significantly bolster our chances of saving the station. Even if
it only punts the decision down the road for a few years, we will then
have a presence on the board, much better WRVU alumni relations, and
even stronger community support. We will not be blindsided and
scrambling to save the station, but can use the time to formulate
alternatives.
I thank every single one of you for your support and dedication
throughout this tough time. We are a incredible community here at
WRVU, and I do not want to see that change. The station deserves
someone who can put more time into it than I have been able to, and I
know that Victor will be able to lead the station well. Thank you for
all that you have taught me,
Mikil Taylor

I just put the KLSU promo into autorotation, but I don't have a CD
that I can burn it onto with me right now. I'll try to get it done
pretty soon.
