Hi all

Following the GCSE results for England being published, I've put a new
article on the site:

How can St Joseph's be classed as a failing school when the brightest children have been creamed off? I wonder how well St Bernard's would do if it were the other way round. I have children in both schools and I don't for one minute agree that St Joseph's is a failing school, whatever the results say. Both schools are excellent in their own right. A bit of sensitivity is needed here.

Hi Claire

I take your point. I've edited the article which is now here:
http://www.savestbernards.co.uk/news/1-latest-news/97-2010-league-tables-published

I'm afraid though that on the new government's criteria, St J's is
officially a "failing school" because fewer than 35% gained 5+ A* - C
grade GCSEs including English & Maths.

However, the "English Baccalaureate" results put St J's as the 2nd
best non-grammar in Slough. It indicates to me that if they had
chosen to offer less academic GCSEs then they could have boosted their
headline results significantly. This is exactly what most of the
other non-grammars have done.

Herschel Grammar's poor English Bacc results seem to indicate that
perhaps they don't make a foreign language GCSE compulsory.

Regards

Paul

Dear Claire Hendy,
Sorry but even though the very brightest children may have been creamed off by St Bernard's,  St Joseph's should still be able to achieve at least 45-50% of its pupils with 5 or more A*-C GCSEs including English and maths. Many other secondary moderns around the country do just that, up around 70% in some cases.
With effective teaching and a bit of effort, GCSE grade C is not rocket science!
Regards and best wishes,
Nick.

How frustating for schools trying to do the best for their children, instead of worrying about league tables!

Yes, but sadly for some children it is rocket science!

I think it very sad and plainly wrong that some people are so intent on
labelling schools and therefore the children that attend them as either
successful or failures. That 'failure' stigma whether justified or not
remains with that child for a long time and I have had first hand
experience of this.

If we are supposed to be such good Catholics why aren't we aimimg to
help others less SUCCESSFUL - you never know the trade off may well be
worth the effort.

We should be measuring the VALUE each school ADDS to each child's
education in a whole variety of ways.

Best of luck to those who are arrogant enough to see themselves as
successful and readily class others whether justified or not as
failures - hope life is always so rosy!!

Thank you for posting the new article, Paul, and to Nick and Claire for discussion
of the SBC / StJ figures and their implications which many will also have seen in last
week's local press.  Thank you also to Paul and Tony for continuing to keep us up
to date on these and all relevant issues.

It is a continuing source of frustration and sadness, as Claire indicates, that while
parents are attempting to find the right ways to ensure the best education for each
of their children, they are so often being diverted from a full appreciation of each
school's true merits by statistics and classifications which can be misleading and
manipulated to suit policy- and decision-makers and funders.

Hopefully now that each school is being allowed to continue separately, both will
succeed in receiving the appropriate individually-tailored support from all quarters
necessary for them to develop for the benefit of their current and future students.

Very best wishes to everyone for the new year!

Susy

Let's, as Catholics support the schools that do all they can to help the children that feel like 'failures', not make it harder for them by demoralising them. God bless them.
