Great news in the Monday letter today:

http://www.st-bernards.slough.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/monday-letter-612-2010.pdf
"The Northamptonshire Diocese ... have now officially withdrawn the
Expression of Interest ... regarding the potential merger of St
Bernard's and St Joseph's. This means that Governors can now plan for
the future of the school and in due course they will be contacting
parents with regards to fund raising and improving the provision for
students."

Fabulous news.......excellent work on keeping us all informed, and thank you for all your hard work..  Is there a way that we could let all feeders schools know this good news, as certain schools eg St Frances from Ascot have not sent anyone to St Bernards for 3 years....just a thought

Wishing everyone a wonderful Christmas and New Year

A brilliant suggestion, Yvonne.  Particularly for those children awaiting their 11+ results
(next week!) and wondering whether they'd commit to St.B's if offered a place...  In fact,
it could be worthwhile alerting all private primary and state middle schools with pupils
and families who would normally include St.B's in their range of choices....

.....good idea but we need to get the info to the parents.  Unless the school puts an announcement in the local press???

Yes, exactly.  I know our old school made any information about secondary schools available
directly to parents, and I was assuming any school contacted would do this. A press release
is an excellent idea, not sure what Mr.McAteer is planning. Perhaps we could arrange to send
a copy of the/a press release to each primary/middle school in the Berkshire, Slough and West
London areas so they were sure to have the information directly???

Hi all

I think that while we were certainly a thorn in the side of those
behind this plan, the main reason it failed was the decision of the
coalition government to refuse funding. Whether that refusal was
anything other than an economic decision, who knows?

I'd like to thank the parent governors, all of whom are on the
Executive Committe of FaCT, namely Tony O'Shea (Chairman of FaCT), Pat
McGill and Chris Beer. Can anyone really imagine that the governors
would have rejected the EoI by an overwhelming 17 votes to 1 were it
not for their superb powers of persuasion?

I'd also like to thank Nick Seaton, Chairman of the Campaign for Real
Education and Paul Dodgshun for their invaluable advice.

In terms of parents with children currently in Year 6 who applied to
St Bernard's, Mr McAteer has been saying for some time that he thought
the merger wouldn't go ahead, so presumably those parents will check
before making a final decision. Of course, though, they have already
made their preferences.

Unfortunately, what the last two years has shown very clearly is that
the Diocese is no friend of St Bernard's so we must stay on our guard
against any attempt to drop academic selection. Perhaps the Diocese
is about to launch plan B?

Expect to see a number of the older teaching staff retire soon. I
imagine that some, quite understandably, will have been postponing
retirement in case they had the good fortune to supplement their lump
sum with a redundancy payment.

I propose keeping this mailing list and the web site going.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Paul

Excellent news!! All the effort of the parents, governors and well wishers helped to withdraw proposed merger. Any thoughts how can we  help the school to build more facilities for the school like Indoor sport centre etc..,?

Cheers!!!

That is what I call a real Xmas present.
I would like to thank those who gave me a mention in dispatches; it is
very much appreciated.
