Some of my thoughts for Canvassing/fund raising on 3/19 and 3/26

Hello once again Pike,

I want to share some of my thoughts about the canvassing/fund raising with you so that we can put forth a good plan of action to raise some good chunk of money for our efforts. Please know that I was not around for or know what transpired during the last one so that I might be putting forth ideas that are already known and covered. Also even though I get to SF somewhat often, I'm not a resident.

Also, it was mentioned that we can have the help of some Stanford students who will be on spring break if we have have the canvassing date moved to 3/20 from 3/19 and we can have them on 3/26 as well. My thought is that the more feet on the ground and the more hands to help out the more efficient we can be with what little time we have to do this. Are people opposed to changing the 3/19 date to 3/20 even though I believe that the flier was posted?

My overarching thought is that since this is a very important major push before 3/31, we need to think big and to spread our resources to where they would have the best probability of bringing in the largest amount of donations that we can possibly garner. The ideas I pose to you here, are by no means meant to limit any other ideas that others bring forth to the effort.
I see this drive as a multi-pronged approach which includes raising donations from pedestrian traffic during the two days of canvassing, getting donations by leaving collection cans along with signs, leaflets or small posters at as many businesses that will allow us to do so and to get donations from business owners who are present when we canvass or by leaving donation envelopes along with save Lyon-Martin information packets for owners who aren't present when we canvass.

My idea about collecting donations from pedestrians is to focus on areas that have a high density or concentration of pedestrian traffic as well as focus on areas that have a high saturation of individual highly trafficked businesses and specific areas that contain large amounts of businesses that have a high likelihood of being sympathetic to the cause or likely to donate for other motivations.

Areas of saturation that come to mind, at the moment, to completely blanket for their high density of pedestrian traffic and businesses that are good possible candidates to leave contribution cans on the business premises as much as possible are as follows:

24th st. from about Diamond to Mission
18th st from about Guerrero to Diamond
Mission st from 16th to 24th or so
Valencia st from 16 to 24th or so
Castro st. from Market to about Jersey except for a few non commercial blocks
Church st from about Duboce to about 17th or 18th
Market st between Castro and about Buchanan
Haight st between Stanyan and about Central
Stanyan st between the panhandle and Haight
Cole st beween Fredrick and  about Page
Irving st. between Arqeullo and about 9th
7th Ave between about Lincoln and  Judah or Kirkham
Northpoint, Bay, Columbus, the Embarcadero, Fort Mason?
North Beach Commercial area
Clement st from Arguello to about 7th ave
Chestnut st between about Divisadero and about Webster
Any other potentially lucrative streets that others suggest

CHAIN STORES to leave donation cans and SHOPPING CENTERS for Pedestrian Traffic and BUSINESSES to hit up for DONATIONS. NOTE: Large Chain stores with multiple cash registers might be fertile ground to leave donation cans at each check out counter IF (A Big If) THE STORE WILL ALLOW THEM. We need to check out the individual chain store policies in regard to leaving donation cans for our cause.

Walgreens 2 stores - Castro and 18th and 18th and Collingwood
Walgreens Noe Valley - Castro and Jersey
Pharmica on 24th st
Whole Foods -  24th & Eureka and new store on Haight Street
Trader Joes - 555 9th, 3 Masonic, 265 Winston, 401 Bay (Fisherman's wharf)
Mollie Stones - 18th near Castro
Safeway - Church and Market, Diamond Heights ?, Marina?

BUSINESSES where we can quite POSSIBLY Leave Donation Cans and Literature:

All coffee houses, small cafes, coffee shops such as Starbucks, Peets, etc.
Neighborhood bakeries, and desert/cafes such as Just Deserts 248 Church, 101 4th st.,and
       3 Embarcadero center
All Bookstores where people browse and hang out such as:
A different light bookstore - Castro and 18th st
Books Inc - Market & 16th & Noe intersection
Noe Valley and Eureka Valley SF pub. library branches (to leave donation cans if allowed)?????
Any other high traffic book store

OTHER POSSIBILITIES
BUSINESSES that CREATE LONG LINES such as movie theater matinees showing "hot movies", ice cream & Gelato places if we luck out and have warm weather, sports bars since 3/19 and 3/26 will be in the heart of March Madness (basketball).

PLEASE NOTE:
The preceding thoughts, information, and plan of attack are simply ideas conjured up in my mind to share with those who will be canvassing and those organizing the canvassing as well as any other interested party. This is partial information subject to change and approval. This is not a product of the body of SLM at this point and is strictly a few ideas off the top of my head. This is a work in progress and open for additional ideas, deletions, comments and suggestions. We can use any and all constructive assistance to help make this canvassing/fund raising drive successful.

Hi Nikki et al!

Yes, thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I think that we should definitely try to hit as many of those business corridors as possible. The chain stores I am far less sure about. In my experience, whether they are independent or chain stores, it actually is better to try to call and talk to a manager or owner first, and then go around and drop off cans or pick up donations when they are expecting us.

Is there any way we can have some of our non-core volunteers make a bunch of phone calls or send emails to alert businesses that we are coming? This would need to happen asap, preferably by around Wednesday or so.

Morgan says that the Stanford students will be able to come on the 19th after all, so that should not be a problem.

I also like the idea of hitting places with lines, but I am worrried that movies and such will kick us out if we are hitting up their patrons. If the weather was going to be nice I would say definitely lets hit up bi-rite creamery but I guess it's probably going to rain... boo!

I would love it if we could each commit to bringing a certain number of people out to canvass. I will commit to at least 3.
