hey Cheryl,
My friend Nicole didn't send the write-up she promised, but I just got off the phone with Erica Guajardo Johnson, who coordinated the last 2 Dine for a Change events. she's sending docs in a few minutes; i'll forward them to you and the group when i get them.
here are the raw notes from my convo w/ Erica. feel free to call her if you have any q's or want to run an idea past her

in this city, the nonprofit fr scene is a popular thing; so many orgs. are doing it
they’re dropping Dine for a Change- dining events are really great cuz anyone with a small budget can still do it (burrito or wine) - but it wasn’t growing exponentially fundraising-wise
incredibly labor-intensive; but if you can establish relationship with owner to get good % (highest was 40%), and you rock out the opp, it’s totally worth it
first year, did all in 1 day (27 restaurants)- taquerias to french bourgoise (20%-40%) - asked for 25% or 40% - some ppl just made their own % and didn’t follow contract
was a crap ton of work; promotion and outreach was the most labor-intensive (flyers, posters, emails)- but bcs it’s not in 1 location, can’t get confirmation that ppl went, so we can see the #s have grown, the outreach must have worked
surpassed the goal: $8000 (raised $12,000) - had really good deal from Amici’s (due to accounting mistake from Amici’s)
2nd year: had it every thursday throughout the month; restaurants chose whatever day they wanted
went down to 21-22 restaurants last year; 4-6 each thursday: there were quite a few restaurants didn’t have ppl ID’d that they were there for DFAC- by spreading it out, got to do it by neighborhood and had many ppl flyering the mission/castro each week; and biznesses saw a stronger relationship w/ biz owners so feel a lot more confident going back to them for future benefits
there was an increase in $ per place but it wasn’t huge (raise $10k instead of $12k but from less restaurants)
start off where we can be really strong (1st year, had restaurant call us and do event 2 weeks before the actual event)- did pick-up, delivery and dine-in business - raised much more $ cuz they had only 1 business for SFWAR that night (raised well over $1000)- had multiple ways for ppl to access it, instead of just dine-in (don’t focus on ones that have only dine-in)
what pool are we drawing from for publicity?
cuz of time and ppl needed to help, wanted to get professional assns (even sorority alumni groups) - get 1 of them or a few to hold a social event at 1 of the restaurants (for a special event)
averaged $600 per restaurant last year; they didn’t pack the restaurants so there’s still potential
docs to send:
can’t find a cold call letter but has a renewal “join us again” letter; will send that along with contract, print-ready letter in b/w and color
don’t tell them SFWAR sent us these prospects:
Papalote is always really involved in the community and down to do events (were comfy with 25%) - they gave $800
Bissap Baobab- owner (Marcos is really sweet; did 20%, but only got $500)- it’s harder to pack that place for some reason
