A little bit of history on recent developments at FLC:
Fort Lewis Campus Community Peace Rally
Tuesday, November 9, 2010
4:30 - 6 p.m.
Meet at the McPherson Chapel on The Rim
PRISM and the Fort Lewis College Office of the President will be
holding a
peace rally in support of peace, tolerance and compassion towards all
people on campus today, Tuesday, November 9, 2010. All of campus, as
well
as the Durango community, is invited to participate by gathering
around
the McPherson Chapel on The Rim at 4:30 p.m. The rally will then
proceed
to the football field.
Our campus has been informed by the Anti-Defamation League that
members of
the Westboro Baptist Church plan to picket today on the Fort Lewis
College
campus against the screening of the film, The Anatomy of Hate.
As some
of you might know, the Westboro Baptist Church holds extreme views
against
groups such as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community
and
often conducts protests across the country. Fort Lewis College has
found
no legal options that would prevent them from holding their protest.
The College has been in contact with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL)
to
seek advice on handling the protest by the Westboro Baptist Church.
The
League has dealt with the WBC in the past and has been very helpful in
offering advice to many different organizations.

FLC protest backs professor: Environmental studies coordinator denied
position
Fort Lewis College students organized in protest after college
administrators informed a popular environmental studies professor that
she would lose her teaching position at the end of the semester.
About 100 students and faculty participated in a student-led walkout
Wednesday afternoon to support the reinstatement of associate
professor Tina Evans as a teacher and coordinator of the environmental
studies program.
"We're here to support Tina because she has done so much for us," said
Brittany Butts, an environmental studies major. "She's who gets us
through school, and we're giving back for all she's given us."
After the walkout, students marched to the administrative offices in
Berndt Hall and up to the office of FLC President Dene Kay Thomas.
Evans, who also is an adviser and former coordinator with the
environmental studies program, said she was given a letter Friday from
Provost Steve Roderick saying that he and other administrators
including Maureen Brandon, dean of natural and behavioral sciences,
had denied her application to become a full-time teacher with the
environmental studies program.
In September, all faculty members on campus were allowed to apply for
positions in the program as a part of a new application process.
Environmental studies professors were required to reapply for teaching
positions, Evans said.
Evans said Friday's letter informed her that she was removed from
teaching because she was unqualified and would be moved to a faculty
position with the library, where she held a tenured position six years
ago.
She has held her position as an associate professor, adviser and
coordinator in the environmental studies department for three years.
She said she has helped design many of the program's courses and
curriculum, runs the environmental studies internship program and has
published several articles about sustainability and environmental
education.
Evans also is a full-time doctoral candidate in sustainability
education at Prescott College in Arizona. She and other professors
said it is typical for a college to hire professors who are working on
doctorates on the condition they complete the degree in a timely
manner.
Mitch Davis, the public affairs officer at FLC, said the college began
a new application process for several programs including environmental
studies because hires previously were being made on a case-by-case
basis and didn't follow clear standards. The new process, created by
administration and faculty, has more specific qualifications,
including the requirement that all applicants have doctorate degrees,
he said.
Davis said he cannot comment on Evans' situation specifically because
it is a personnel matter.
"Miss Evans continues to be an employee of the college with good
standing," he said. "Students have the right to protest, and I think
this was a valid protest."
Roderick and Brandon were unable to be reached for comment.
Reyes Garcia, a retired Southwest studies, religious studies,
environmental studies and ethics professor who still is teaching at
the college this year, said that ego issues were at work in Evans'
removal.
"It's outrageous," Garcia said at the walkout. "The administration
can't stomp on its faculty like this."
Garcia worked with Evans on the Faculty Senate, and, because he
technically is retired, he said he had more liberty to express his
views about the college's administration.
Evans had tears in her eyes as she heard about the students' actions
in class afterward.
"It's very moving and very satisfying that students are so attached to
this major," she said. "We need to make big changes in the world, and
you do that with students who are committed, like these students."
Many students attended the Associated Students of Fort Lewis College
student senate meeting later in the day where the senate voted in
favor of a resolution supporting Evans' reinstatement.
